I Know in Whom I Trust

Author: Johan Olof Wallin; Samuel Magnus Hill Meter: 6.7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 I know in Whom I trust When guilt of sin oppresses, When anguish and remorse My burdened soul distresses; I come before Thy throne, O God, in Jesus' Name; Thy mercy, love, and truth Forever are the same. 2 I know in Whom I trust When, troubled and dejected, I lack the strength to go The way of God selected' To Jesus then I pray With a repentant mind, And strength of holiness I through His Spirit find. 3 I know in Whom I trust When worldly pomp and splendor Would lure my heart away, For He is my Defender. I hear His warning voice, I feel His loving hand; Temptations and deceits With Him I thus withstand. 4 I know in Whom I trust When peace and joy forsake me, When fain my heart would break, And sorrows overtake me. The suffering of my Lord, His anguish, pain, and woe Remind me of the way We after Him must go. 5 I know in Whom I trust When evening shadows lengthen, When death stands at the door,-- For Christ is there to strengthen. He died upon the cross To conquer death and hell; A Conqueror He rose, And all with us is well. 6 I know in Whom I trust; I praise Him and adore Him; By works I show my faith; My heart I lay before Him; Not only crying, "Lord!" I take Him as my Guide, And thus in life and death In Him alone abide. Amen. How Can I Thank You, Lord

Author: David Denicke, 1630-80; August Crull, 1845-1923 Meter: 6.7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 12 hymnals Lyrics: 1 How can I thank you, Lord, For all your loving-kindness, That you have patiently Borne with me in my blindness! When dead in many sins And trespasses I lay, I kindled, holy God, Your anger ev'ry day. 2 It is your work alone That I am now converted; O'er Satan's work in me You have your pow'r asserted. Your mercy and your grace That rise afresh each morn Have turned my stony heart Into a heart new-born. 3 Lord, you have raised me up To joy and exultation And clearly shown the way That leads me to salvation. My sins are washed away; For this I thank you, Lord. Now with my heart and soul All evil I abhor. 4 Grant that your Spirit's help To me be always given Lest I should fall again And lose the way to heaven. Grant that he give me strength In my infirmity; May he renew my heart To serve you willingly. 5 O Father, God of love, Now hear my supplication; O Savior, Son of God, Accept my adoration; O Holy Spirit, be My ever faithful guide That I may serve you here And there with you abide. Why do the heathen rage?

Author: B. H. Kennedy Meter: 6.7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Why do the heathen rage? What are the nations dreaming? In vain against the Lord And His Anointed scheming, Kings of the earth arise, And leaguéd rulers say: "Come, let us break their bands, And cast their cords away." 2 He who is throned in heaven Derides their preparation; The Lord upon them pours His scornful indignation: Soon shall His voice of wrath Their souls with terror thrill "Yet I have set my King On Zion's holy hill."-- 3 Now will I cry aloud And tell the Lord's great token: "Thou art My Son," He saith: To me the word was spoken: "Yea, Thee have I this day Begotten: ask of Me, And Thine the heathen, Thine Earth's utmost parts shall be: 4 Beneath Thine iron rod Thy foemen shall be shattered, As by the potter's hand The broken shreds lie scattered." Be wise, then, O ye kings, Ye earthly judges, hear; Serve ye the Lord with awe, Rejoice with trembling fear. 5 Bow down and kiss the Son, Lest, if His wrath awaken, Ye fail and fade away, For evermore forsaken. Soon may His anger burn, A lightly kindled flame; Then blessed are all they That trust His holy name. Lord Jesus, You Have Come

Author: Eberhard L. Fischer, 1695-1773 Meter: 6.7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Lord Jesus, you have come A teacher sent from heaven And by both word and deed God's truth to us have given. You wisely have ordained The holy ministry That we, your flock, may know The truth that sets us free. 2 O blessed ministry Of reconciliation, That shows the way to God And brings to us salvation! Lord, by your gospel pure, You bless and keep your fold; You call, enlighten, keep; You comfort and uphold. 3 Preserve this ministry While harvest days are keeping; And since the fields are ripe And hands are few for reaping, Send workers forth, O Lord, The sheaves to gather in That not a soul be lost Which you have come to win. 4 The servants you have called And to your Church are giving Preserve in doctrine pure And holiness of living. Your Spirit fill their hearts And charge their words with pow'r; What they should boldly speak, Oh, give them in that hour! 5 Bring those into your fold Who still to you are strangers; Guard those who are within Against offense and dangers. Press onward with your Word Till pastor and his fold Through faith in you, O Christ, Your glory shall behold. Rise from Your Graves, Ye Dead

Author: Johann F. Starck, 1680-1756 Meter: 6.7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: Rise from your graves, ye dead! Lyrics: 1. Rise from your graves, ye dead! Thus shall the call be sounded, Which on the latter day shall find us all astounded; Which to the faithful flock shall promise rare delight, And fill the trembling hearts of sinners with affright. 2. Rise from your graves, ye dead! Your sleep at last is over, Ye blessèd of the Lord, no more without shall hover. The garments are prepared, the crowns for you are stored, Enter into the joy and comfort of your Lord! 3. Rise from your graves, ye dead! Come from your earthly cover; Ye wicked all the pangs of hell shall now discover. Ye once rejected Me, I hold you nothing worth; Wailing and gnashing teeth shall be your lot henceforth. 4. Rise from your graves, ye dead! Lo, here are bone and tissue Flesh, sinew, hands, eye, foot! from earth and air they issue. That wherewith you have served the Lord is glorified, That wherewith you have sinned, consumed and cast aside. 5. Rise from your graves, ye dead! Ye faithful now shall glory In halos like the sun, undimmed, untransitory. Immortal bodies with immortal souls shall blend, Ye shall enjoy the rest of saints that hath no end. I Am a Child of God

Author: Mary Jackson Cathey Meter: 6.7.6.7.6.6.6.6 Appears in 1 hymnal First Line: I am a child of God, the One who made and keeps me Lyrics: I am a child of God, the One who made and keeps me. By God's free gift of love, God's child I always will be. Forever I belong, I know that this is true; and with my mind and heart, I trust and love God, too. God's image is in us, the people of creation. No matter where we live, we share a close relation. God's covenant is sure, eternal word for all who follow in God's way and answer to God's call. God never turns from us, not even in our sinning. God loves and waits for us to claim a new beginning. By opening our hearts, we then prepare the way for God's love to come in and guide us every day. I thank God for that love and all the world around me, the seen and unseen things, and promised things that will be. Through worship, trust, and prayer, may I reflect God's will. Let love be seen in me as I God's word fulfill.
