Courtney, John. (King and Queen County, Virginia, ca. 1740--December 18, 1824, Richmond, Virginia). Son of Robert Courtney, who died when John was young. Apprenticed to a carpenter. Converted around 1772-1773, became Baptist minister. Married Jane, who died in 1808. Eight children, of whom three survived John. After the American Revolution, he moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he was the second pastor of Richmond Baptist (now First Baptist) Church in 1788, succeeding Joshua Morris, and served until his death in 1824.
