150. He Giveth Quietness

1 In lowly and hidden places,
Away from the crowd and crush,
Each filling our humble spaces,
Shut in from the active rush—
We’re waiting and watching, and praying
For his kingdom soon to come,
While here we are quietly staying
Till Jesus calls “Come home.”

Refrain:
He giveth quietness,
He giveth quietness,
He giveth quietness,
And who then shall make afraid?

2 The place where he put and keeps us,
The place which he knows is best,
Where, in quietness and assurance,
He bids us to tarry and rest.
For never a “blast of hurry”
Has the pow’r to touch us there,
And never an anxious worry
Shall line our brows with care. [Refrain]

3 We’ll gain, in each quiet hour,
New strength for the coming strife;
If we wait the promised power,
‘Twill deepen our Christian life.
The enemy’s wiles shall never
Find us fainting nor dismayed,
For he giveth quietness ever;
Who, then, shall make afraid? [Refrain]

4 It may not be easy to whisper,
Repeating it day by day,
Instead of “I’ll go where he sends me,”
“I’ll stay where he wants me to stay.”
The door of his love will open,
And from out the shadows dim,
To the inner court of his presence,
The King will call us to him. [Refrain]
