Representative Text

1 Sabbath bells are pealing soft and clear,
As the morning breaks,
Saying: “Rise, the Sabbath draweth near;”
As the spirit gently awakes.
Promise of a day of peace and rest
Ev’ry sound foretells,
Oh the joy they bring,
As they sweetly ring,
Blessed holy Sabbath bells!

Chorus:
Sweet Sabbath bells, sweet Sabbath bells,
How sweet their chime, as now they’re swinging,
What a joy foretold,
From throats of gold,
Of heaven’s music which to earth
They now are bringing.

2 Sabbath bells their heav’nly music raise
As the noon draws nigh,
Ev’ry tone a golden note of praise
To the Lord who reigneth on high.
Their’s a bidding sweet to enter in
Where the Lord dispels
All that grieves the breast,
Giving joy and rest,
Oh those blessed Sabbath bells! [Chorus]

3 Sabbath bells their benediction ring
Neath the ev’ning shades,
“Peace be with you,” are the words they sing
As the daylight beaut’usly fades.
Bells at morn, at noon, and eventide,
How the glad heart swells
With the thoughts they raise
On our holy days;
Oh those blessed Sabbath bells! [Chorus]
