Representative Text

1 Joy! joy! joy! wonderful joy, wonderful joy,
Onward moves the cross our banner,
Darkness to destroy.
Over the world’s long night,
Shining so bright, shining so bright,
Hope’s bright angel, blest evangel,
Take her flight.
Speed thee, everlasting gospel,
Gladly onward go,
Gladly onward go,
Gladly onward go,
Waves of life are swiftly gliding,
Earth to overflow,
Earth to overflow,
Earth to overflow,
Loose the soul from error’s pinion,
Bowed in sin and pain,
Break the idol’s stern dominion,
Christ only shall reign.

Refrain:
Joy! joy! joy Christians rejoice, Christians rejoice,
You may share with your Redeemer,
Make his work your choice.
You may shine lights for God,
Never to wane, never to wane,
Till the whole earth, joins the chorus,
Christ shall reign.

2 Hope, hope, hope, glorious hope, glorious hope,
Earth is reaching, hands beseeching,
Where the nations grope;
Morning thy hills shall climb,
Music shall chime, music shall chime,
Christ shall waken lands forsaken,
Soon ‘tis time.
List, the songs from heaven falling,
Soothing all our woe,
Soothing all our woe,
Soothing all our woe,
Hark! the joyous echoes calling,
Peace and truth shall grow,
Peace and truth shall grow,
Peace and truth shall grow,
Oh, this work is God’s appointed,
Hands of might sustain;
Follow Christ the Lord’s anointed,
Christ only shall reign. [Refrain]

Author: Priscilla J. Owens

Owens, Priscilla Jane, was born July 21, 1829, of Scotch and Welsh descent, and is now (1906) resident at Baltimore, where she is engaged in public-school work. For 50 years Miss Owen has interested herself in Sunday-school work, and most of her hymns were written for children's services. Her hymn in the Scotch Church Hymnary, 1898, "We have heard a joyful sound" (Missions), was written for a Sunday-school Mission Anniversary, and the words were adapted to the chorus "Vive le Roi" in the opera The Huguenots.
