Notes

Freu dich du werthe Christenheit. [Easte.] Hoffmann von Fallersleben, edition 1861, p. 172, gives this in 3 stanzas of 7 lines from a Breslau MS. about 1478. Wackernagel, ii. pp. 738-741, gives 6 versions.
The only translation is: ā€¯Rejoice, dear Christendom, to-day," by Miss Winkworth, 1869, p. 87. Her stanzas i.-iii. are from Wackernagel's No. 963(2), a version written in a copy of the Bohemian Brethren's Gesang-Buch, 1566: and stanza iv., a doxology, is from Wackernagel's No. 964 quoted from Ein edel Kleinat der Seelen, Dillingen, 1568. [Rev. James Mearns, M.A.]
