Author: George P. Morris

Morris, George, was born in Philadelphia, Oct. 10, 1802. In early life he removed to New York, where, in 1822, he became the editor of the New York Mirror magazine. On that magazine, together with The Home Journal, he was associated with N. P. Willis. His works include The Deserted Bride, and Other Poems, 1843; Poems, 1853; American Melodies; and some prose pieces. He is best known as a writer of songs, one of which, "Woodman, spare that tree," is very popular. His hymns, "Man dieth and wasteth away " (Victory over Death"; and "Searcher of hearts! from mine erase", Lent), are in a few American collections, as the Songs for the Sanctuary, 1865, and the Methodist Hymnal, 1878.
