John Edmund Barss was born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia on June 21, 1871. He graduated from Acadia College in Wolfville with a B.A. in 1891. He received a second B.A. from Harvard in 1892 and an M.A. from Harvard in 1893. He taught for a year at Roxbury Latin School in Boston, then at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and at Loomis School in Windsor Connectictut. Though no firm documentation exists, ST. ANNE was probably composed by William Croft (PHH 149), possibly when he was organist from 1700-1711 at St. Anne's Church in Soho, London, England.
