Representative Text

1 A message from our Father,
From yonder home of light,
Angelic hosts are bringing
On this most glorious night;
Bethlehem’s star is glowing
Most radiantly on high,
While songs of exultation
Re-echo through the sky.

Refrain:
Peace on earth, good will to men,
And to the Savior glory;
For He is born in Bethlehem,
Bright angels tell the story;
Let us with joyful hearts reply,
Sweet Jesu, we adore Thee!

2 We seek the lowly stable,
Led by the angels fair,
For Christ, the Son of Mary,
Is humbly cradled there;
With cherubs watching o’er Him,
And seraphs thronging round;
O enter in with holy joy!
That place is hallowed ground. [Refrain]

3 With shepherds poor and lowly,
Our infant God we greet;
We offer soul and body
In homage at His feet;
He lieth in the manger
Who rules the worlds on high;
O mighty God, we bless Thee,
We own Thy majesty! [Refrain]

4 Hail, sweet and precious Savior,
Now born to set us free!
Hail, lovely Rose of Sharon,
All glory be to Thee!
Hail, greater Son of David,
Our Father’s gift of love!
We bless, adore and praise Thee,
O Daystar from above! [Refrain]

5 With Christmas benediction
Fill every soul, O Lord!
Desire of all the nations,
Our blest, incarnate God!
A message from our Father
Sweet angel voices bring;
Light up with joy the tapers,
Let every church bell ring! [Refrain]

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >
