Psalm 119 - 1 (ALEPH)

Appears in 15 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119:1-8 First Line: Blessed are they that undefil'd Lyrics: 1 Blessèd are they that undefiled, and straight are in the way; Who in the Lord's most holy law do walk, and do not stray. 2 Blessèd are they who to observe his statutes are inclined; And who do seek the living God with their whole heart and mind. 3 Such in his ways do walk, and they do no iniquity. 4 Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts carefully. 5 O that thy statutes to observe thou would'st my ways direct! 6 Then shall I not be shamed, when I thy precepts all respect. 7 Then with integrity of heart thee will I praise and bless, When I the judgments all have learned of thy pure righteousness. 8 That I will keep thy statutes all firmly resolved have I: O do not then, most gracious God, forsake me utterly.

Psalm 119 Part 4

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 472 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: How shall the young secure their hearts Lyrics: How shall the young secure their hearts, And guard their lives from sin? Thy word the choicest rules imparts To keep the conscience clean. When once it enters to the mind, It spreads such light abroad, The meanest souls instruction find, And raise their thoughts to God. 'Tis like the sun, a heav'nly light, That guides us all the day; And through the dangers of the night, A lamp to lead our way. The men that keep thy law with care, And meditate thy word, Grow wiser than their teachers are, And better know the Lord. Thy precepts make me truly wise: I hate the sinner's road; I hate my own vain thoughts that rise, But love thy law, my God. [The starry heavens thy rule obey, The earth maintains her place; And these thy servants night and day Thy skill and power express. But still thy law and gospel, Lord, Have lessons more divine; Not earth stands firmer than thy word, Nor stars so nobly shine.] Thy word is everlasting truth, How pure is every page! That holy book shall guide our youth, And well support our age. Topics: Instruction from Scripture; Scripture instruction from it

O that my God would grant me grace To know and do his will! O send thy Spirit down to write Thy law upon my heart! Nor let my tongue indulge deceit, Nor act the liar's part. From vanity turn off my eyes; Let no corrupt design, Nor covetous desires, arise Within this soul of mine. Order my footsteps by thy word, And make my heart sincere; Let sin have no dominion, Lord, But keep my conscience clear. My soul hath gone too far astray, My feet too often slip; Yet since I've not forgot thy way, Restore thy wand'ring sheep. Make me to walk in thy commands, 'Tis a delightful road; Nor let my head, or heart, or hands, Offend against my God. Topics: Comfort holiness, and pardon; Desire of holiness; Holiness desired

I'll read the histories of thy love, And keep thy laws in sight, While through the promises I rove, With ever fresh delight. 'Tis a broad land of wealth unknown, Where springs of life arise, Seeds of immortal bliss are sown, And hidden glory lies. Psalm 119 Part 5

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 192 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: O how I love thy holy law! Lyrics: O how I love thy holy law! 'Tis daily my delight; And thence my meditations draw Divine advice by night. My waking eyes prevent the day To meditate thy word; My soul with longing melts away To hear thy gospel, Lord. How doth thy word my heart engage! How well employ my tongue! And in my tiresome pilgrimage, Yields me a heav'nly song. Am I a stranger or at home, 'Tis my perpetual feast; Not honey dropping from the comb So much allures the taste. No treasures so enrich the mind; Nor shall thy word be sold For loads of silver well refined, Nor heaps of choicest gold. When nature sinks, and spirits droop, Thy promises of grace Are pillars to support my hope, And there I write thy praise. Topics: Meditation; Book of nature and Scripture; Midnight thoughts; Delight in the law of God; Law of God delight in it; Scripture delight in it

Psalm 119 Part 3

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 170 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: Thou art my portion, O my God Lyrics: Thou art my portion, O my God; Soon as I know thy way, My heart makes haste t' obey thy word, And suffers no delay. I choose the path of heav'nly truth, And glory in my choice; Not all the riches of the earth Could make me so rejoice. The testimonies of thy grace I set before my eyes; Thence I derive my daily strength, And there my comfort lies. If once I wander from thy path, I think upon my ways, Then turn my feet to thy commands, And trust thy pard'ning grace. Now I am thine, for ever thine, O save thy servant, Lord; Thou art my shield, my hiding-place; My hope is in thy word. Thou hast inclined this heart of mine Thy statutes to fulfil; And thus, till mortal life shall end, Would I perform thy will. Psalm 119 Part 7

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 133 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: Let all the heathen writers join Lyrics: Let all the heathen writers join To form one perfect book; Great God! if once compared with thine, How mean their writings look! Not the most perfect rules they gave Could show one sin forgiv'n, Nor lead a step beyond the grave; But thine conduct to heav'n. I've seen an end to what we call Perfection here below; How short the powers of nature fall, And can no further go! Yet men would fain be just with God By works their hands have wrought; But thy commands, exceeding broad, Extend to every thought. In vain we boast perfection here, While sin defiles our frame, And sinks our virtues down so far, They scarce deserve the name. Our faith, and love, and every grace, Fall far below thy word; But perfect truth and righteousness Dwell only with the Lord. Topics: Nature and Scripture; Scripture compared with the book of nature; Instruction from Scripture; Scripture perfection

Psalm 119 Part 16

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 95 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: My soul lies cleaving to the dust Lyrics: My soul lies cleaving to the dust; Lord, give me life divine; From vain desires and every lust Turn off these eyes of mine. I need the influence of thy grace To speed me in thy way, Lest I should loiter in my race, Or turn my feet astray. When sore afflictions press me down, I need thy quick'ning powers; Thy word that I have rested on Shall help my heaviest hours. Are not thy mercies sovereign still, And thou a faithful God? Wilt thou not grant me warmer zeal To run the heav'nly road? Does not my heart thy precepts love, And long to see thy face? And yet how slow my spirits move Without enliv'ning grace! Then shall I love thy gospel more, And ne'er forget thy word, When I have felt its quick'ning power, To draw me near the Lord. Topics: Desire of quickening grace; Quickening grace

Psalm 119 Part 14

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 91 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 119 First Line: Consider all my sorrows, Lord Lyrics: Consider all my sorrows, Lord, And thy deliv'rance send; My soul for thy salvation faints When will my troubles end? Yet I have found 'tis good for me To bear my Father's rod; Afflictions make me learn thy law, And live upon my God. This is the comfort I enjoy When new distress begins- I read thy word, I run thy way, And hate my former sins. Had not thy word been my delight When earthly joys were fled, My soul, oppressed with sorrow's weight Had sunk amongst the dead. I know thy judgments, Lord, are right, Though they may seem severe; The sharpest suff'rings I endure Flow from thy faithful care. Before I knew thy chast'ning rod My feet were apt to stray; But now I learn to keep thy word, Nor wander from thy way.
