A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief

Author: James Montgomery, 1771–1854 Hymnal: LDS1985 #29 (1985) Tune Key: A Flat Major Lyrics: 1. A poor wayfaring Man of grief Hath often crossed me on my way, Who sued so humbly for relief That I could never answer nay. I had not pow’r to ask his name, Whereto he went, or whence he came; Yet there was something in his eye That won my love; I knew not why. 2. Once, when my scanty meal was spread, He entered; not a word he spake. Just perishing for want of bread. I gave him all; he blessed it, brake, And ate, but gave me part again. Mine was an angel’s portion then, For while I fed with eager haste, The crust was manna to my taste. 3. I spied him where a fountain burst Clear from the rock; his strength was gone. The heedless water mocked his thirst; He heard it, saw it hurrying on. I ran and raised the suff’rer up; Thrice from the stream he drained my cup, Dipped and returned it running o’er; I drank and never thirsted more. 4. ’Twas night; the floods were out; it blew A winter hurricane aloof. I heard his voice abroad and flew To bid him welcome to my roof. I warmed and clothed and cheered my guest And laid him on my couch to rest, Then made the earth my bed and seemed In Eden’s garden while I dreamed. 5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death, I found him by the highway side. I roused his pulse, brought back his breath, Revived his spirit, and supplied Wine, oil, refreshment—he was healed. I had myself a wound concealed, But from that hour forgot the smart, And peace bound up my broken heart. 6. In pris’n I saw him next, condemned To meet a traitor’s doom at morn. The tide of lying tongues I stemmed, And honored him ’mid shame and scorn. My friendship’s utmost zeal to try, He asked if I for him would die. The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill, But my free spirit cried, “I will!” 7. Then in a moment to my view The stranger started from disguise. The tokens in his hands I knew; The Savior stood before mine eyes. He spake, and my poor name he named, “Of me thou hast not been ashamed. These deeds shall thy memorial be; Fear not, thou didst them unto me.” Topics: Jesus Christ Savior; Love; Parables; Restoration; Service Scripture: Matthew 25:31-40 Languages: English Tune Title: DUANE STREET

The Wintry Day, Descending to Its Close

Author: Orson F. Whitney, 1855–1931 Hymnal: LDS1985 #37 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.10 D Tune Key: A Flat Major Lyrics: 1. The wintry day, descending to its close, Invites all wearied nature to repose, And shades of night are falling dense and fast, Like sable curtains closing o’er the past. Pale through the gloom the newly fallen snow Wraps in a shroud the silent earth below As tho ’twere mercy’s hand had spread the pall, A symbol of forgiveness unto all. 2. I cannot go to rest, but linger still In meditation at my windowsill, While, like the twinkling stars in heaven’s dome, Come one by one sweet memories of home. And wouldst thou ask me where my fancy roves To reproduce the happy scenes it loves, Where hope and memory together dwell And paint the pictured beauties that I tell? 3. Away beyond the prairies of the West, Where exiled Saints in solitude were blest, Where industry the seal of wealth has set Amid the peaceful vales of Deseret, Unheeding still the fiercest blasts that blow, With tops encrusted by eternal snow, The tow’ring peaks that shield the tender sod Stand, types of freedom reared by nature’s God. 4. The wilderness, that naught before would yield, Is now become a fertile, fruitful field. Where roamed at will the fearless Indian band, The templed cities of the Saints now stand. And sweet religion in its purity Invites all men to its security. There is my home, the spot I love so well, Whose worth and beauty pen nor tongue can tell. Topics: Closing; Evening; Home; Nature; Pioneers; Restoration Scripture: Isaiah 51:3 Languages: English Tune Title: ALEX

How Firm a Foundation

Author: Robert Keen Hymnal: LDS1985 #85 (1985) Meter: 11.11.11.6.6.11 Tune Key: A Flat Major Lyrics: 1. How firm a foundation, ye Saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, Who unto the Savior, who unto the Savior, Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled? 2. In ev’ry condition—in sickness, in health, In poverty’s vale or abounding in wealth, At home or abroad, on the land or the sea— As thy days may demand, as thy days may demand, As thy days may demand, so thy succor shall be. 3. Fear not, I am with thee; oh, be not dismayed, For I am thy God and will still give thee aid. I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by my righteous, upheld by my righteous, Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. 4. When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The rivers of sorrow shall not thee o’erflow, For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee, and sanctify to thee, And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress. 5. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply. The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume, thy dross to consume, Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. 6. E’en down to old age, all my people shall prove My sov’reign, eternal, unchangeable love; And then, when gray hair shall their temples adorn, Like lambs shall they still, like lambs shall they still, Like lambs shall they still in my bosom be borne. 7. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose I will not, I cannot, desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, I’ll never, no never, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake! Great God, Attend While Zion Sings

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674–1748 Hymnal: LDS1985 #88 (1985) Tune Key: A Flat Major Lyrics: 1. Great God, attend while Zion sings The joy that from thy presence springs. To spend one day with thee on earth Exceeds a thousand days of mirth. 2. Might I enjoy the meanest place Within thy house, O God of grace, No tents of ease or thrones of pow’r Should tempt my feet to leave thy door. 3. God is our sun; he makes our day. God is our shield; he guards our way From all assaults of hell and sin, From foes without and fears within. 4. All needful grace will God bestow And crown that grace with glory too. He gives us all things and withholds No blessings due to upright souls. 5. Our God, our King, whose sovereign sway The glorious hosts of heav’n obey (And devils at thy presence flee); Blest is the man that trusts in thee! Ye Simple Souls Who Stray

Author: Charles Wesley, 1707–1788 Hymnal: LDS1985 #118 (1985) Tune Key: A Flat Major Lyrics: 1. Ye simple souls who stray Far from the path of peace, That lonely, unfrequented way To life and happiness, Why will ye folly love, And throng the downward road, And hate the wisdom from above, And mock the sons of God? 2. Madness and misery Ye count our life beneath, And nothing great or good can see Or glorious in our death. But thru the Holy Ghost We witness better things, For he whose blood is all our boast Has made us priests and kings. 3. Riches unsearchable In Jesus’ love we know, And pleasures springing from the well Of life our souls o’erflow. As we seek heav’nly bliss, Angels our steps attend, And God himself our Father is, And Jesus is our Friend. 4. With him we walk in white; We in his image shine; Our robes are robes of glorious light, Our righteousness divine. On all the kings of earth With pity we look down And claim, in virtue of our birth, A never-fading crown. I Stand All Amazed

Hymnal: LDS1985 #193 (1985) Meter: Irregular Tune Key: A Flat Major First Line: I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me Refrain First Line: Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me Lyrics: 1. I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me, Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me. I tremble to know that for me he was crucified, That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died. [Chorus:] Oh, it is wonderful that he should care for me Enough to die for me! Oh, it is wonderful, wonderful to me! 2. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine, That he should extend his great love unto such as I, Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify. [Chorus] 3. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt! Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget? No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat, Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet.[Chorus] Topics: Grace; Gratitude; Jesus Christ Friend; Jesus Christ Savior; Plan of Salvation; Praise; Sacrament Scripture: John 15:13 Languages: English Tune Title: GABRIEL
