I am a great complainer, that bears the name of Christ

Hymnal: The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion (New ed. thoroughly rev. and much enl.) #18 (1854) Meter: 7.6 Publication Date: 1854 Lyrics: 1. I am a great complainer, that bears the name of Christ; Come, all ye Zion mourners, and listen to my cries: I've many sore temptations, and sorrows to my soul; I feel my faith declining, and my affections cold. 2. O Lord of life and glory, my sins to me reveal, And by thy love and power, my sin sick soul be healed; I thought my warfare over, no trouble I should see; But now I'm like the lonely dove, that mourns on the wavering tree. 3. I wish it was with me now, as in the days of old, When the glorious light of Jesus was flowing in my soul; But now I am distressed, and no relief can find, With a hard deceitful heart, and a wretched wandering mind. 4. It is great pride and passion, beset me on my way, So I am filled with folly, and so neglect to pray; While others run rejoicing, and seem to lose no time, I am so weak I stumble, and so I'm left behind. 5. I read that peace and happiness meet Christians in their way, That bear their cross with meekness, and don't neglect to pray But I, a thousand objects beset me in my way So I am filled with folly, and so neglect to pray. Jerusalem the Golden

Author: Bernard of Cluny; John M. Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Lutheran Book of Worship #347 (1978) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Publication Date: 1978 First Line: Jerusalem, the golden Lyrics: 1 Jerusalem the golden, With milk and honey blest, Beneath your contemplation Sink heart and voice oppressed. I know not, oh, I know not, What social joys are there, What radiancy of glory, What bliss beyond compare. 2 They stand, those halls of Zion, Conjubilant with song And bright with many an angel And all the martyr throng. The prince is ever in them; The daylight is serene; The pastures of the blessed Are decked in glorious sheen. 3 There is the throne of David, And there, from care released, The shout of those who triumph, The song of those who feast. And they, who with their leader Have conquered in the fight, Forever and forever Are clad in robes of white. 4 Oh, sweet and blessed country, The home of God's elect! Oh, sweet and blessed country, That eager hearts expect! In mercy, Jesus, bring us To that dear land of rest! You are, with God the Father And Spirit, ever blest. When Jesus Came to Jordan

Author: Fred Pratt Green Hymnal: The United Methodist Hymnal #252 (1989) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Publication Date: 1989 Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John, he did not come for pardon but as the sinless one. He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins, to speak the vital sentence with which good news begins. 2 He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss, for us and our salvation to die upon the cross. So when the dove descended on him, the Son of Man, the hidden years had ended, the age of grace began. 3 Come, Holy Spirit, aid us to keep the vows we make; this very day invade us, and every bondage break. Come, give our lives direction, the gift we covet most: to share the resurrection that leads to Pentecost. What Was Your Vow and Vision

Author: Brian Wren Hymnal: Chalice Hymnal #177 (1995) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Publication Date: 1995 Lyrics: 1 What was your vow and vision, revealed and recognized, Christ, when you came to Jordan and asked to be baptized? Was there a sudden splendor of prophets, priests and kings, a wind that stirred the waters, a blur of mighty wings? 2 Was this God's call, the crowning of all you had become: "Go, show and tell my coming, my own, my chosen one?" Did scripture join with scripture, revealing in surprise the triumph of a servant rejected and despised? 3 We meet you at the water and ponder why and how, in hope that we may follow where God is going now, anointed by your Spirit, reborn, and energized, through deed and word proclaiming: "In Christ we are baptized!"
