Oh, that I Had a Thousand Voices

Author: Johann Mentzer, 1658-1734 Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 11 hymnals Matching Instances: 11 Lyrics: 1 O, that I had a thousand voices To praise my God with thousand tongues! My heart, which in the Lord rejoices, Would then proclaim in grateful songs To all, wherever I might be, What great things God has done for me. 2 O all you pow'rs that he implanted, Arise, keep silence now no more; Put forth the strength that God has granted! Your noblest work is to adore. O soul and body, join to raise With heartfelt joy our maker's praise. 3 You forest leaves so green and tender That dance for joy in summer air, You meadow grasses, bright and slender, You flow'rs so fragrant and so fair, You live to show God's praise alone. Join me to make his glory known. 4 All creatures that have breath and motion, That throng the earth, the sea, the sky, Come, share with me my heart's devotion, Help me to sing God's praises high. My utmost pow'rs can never quite Declare the wonders of his might. 5 Creator, humbly I implore you To listen to my earthly song Until that day when I adore you, When I have joined the angel throng And learned with choirs of heaven to sing Eternal anthems to my king. Now I Have Found the Firm Foundation

Author: Johann A. Rothe, 1688-1758 Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 12 hymnals Matching Instances: 4 Lyrics: 1 Now I have found the firm foundation Which holds my life forever sure; 'Twas laid before the world's creation In Christ my Savior's wounds secure, Foundation which unmoved shall stay When heav'n and earth will pass away. 2 It is that mercy never ending, Which human wisdom far transcends, Of him who, loving arms extending, To wretched sinners condescends. His heart with pity still will break Whether we seek him or forsake. 3 Our ruin God has not intended; For our salvation he has yearned. For this his Son to earth descended And then again to heav'n returned; For this so patient evermore He's knocking at our heart's closed door. 4 O depth of love, to me revealing The sea where my sins disappear! In Christ my wounds find perfect healing; There is no condemnation here! For Jesus' blood through earth and skies Forever "Mercy! Mercy!" cries. 5 Let mercy cause me to be willing To bear my lot and not to fret. While he my restless heart is stilling, May I this mercy not forget! Whatever comes my heart to test, His mercy is my only rest. 6 Lord, I will stand on this foundation As long as I on earth remain; This will engage my meditation While I the breath of life retain. And then, when face to face with you, I'll sing your mercy great and true. This Night A Wondrous Revelation

Author: Anna Hoppe; C. F. Nachtenhoefer Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 7 hymnals Matching Instances: 3 Lyrics: 1 This night a wondrous revelation Makes known to me God’s love and grace; The Child that merits adoration Brings light to our benighted race, And though a thousand suns did shine, Still brighter were that Light divine. 2 The Sun of grace for thee is beaming; Rejoice, my soul, in Jesus’ birth! The light from yonder manger streaming Sends forth its rays o’er all the earth. It drives the night of sin away And turns our darkness into day. 3 This light, which all thy gloom can banish, The bliss of heaven glorifies; When sun and moon and star shall vanish, Its rays shall still illume the skies; Thine eyes thro' all eternity The glory of that Light shall see. 4 O Jesus, precious Sun of gladness, Fill Thou my soul with light, I pray! Dispel the gloomy night of sadness, And teach Thou me this Christmas day How I a child of light may be, Aglow with light that comes from Thee. Amen. Your Spirit now shall live within. 2 My loving Father, there you took me To be henceforth your child and heir. My faithful Savior, there you let me The fruit of all your sorrows share. O Holy Spirit, comfort me When threat'ning clouds around I see. 3 My faithful God, you fail me never; Your promise surely will endure. Oh, cast me not away forever If words and deeds become impure. Have mercy when I come defiled; Forgive, lift up, restore your child. 4 All that I am and love most dearly - Receive it all, O Lord, from me. Let me confess my faith sincerely And help me your own child to be! Let nothing that I am or own Serve any will but yours alone. By Grace I'm Saved, Grace Free and Boundless

Author: Christian L. Scheidt Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Appears in 24 hymnals Matching Instances: 2 Lyrics: 1 By grace I'm saved, grace free and boundless; my soul, believe and doubt it not. Why stagger at this word of promise? Has Scripture ever falsehood taught? No; then this word must true remain: by grace you, too, shall heav'n obtain. 2 By grace! None dare lay claim to merit; our works and conduct have no worth. God in his love sent our Redeemer, Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth; his death did for our sins atone, and we are saved by grace alone. 3 By grace! O mark this word of promise when you are by your sins oppressed, when Satan plagues your troubled conscience, and when your heart is seeking rest. What reason cannot comprehend God by his grace to you will send. 4 By grace! This ground of faith is certain; So long as God is true, it stands. What saints have penned by inspiration, what in his Word our God commands, what our whole faith must rest upon, is grace alone, grace in his Son.
