I Sing the Mighty Power

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 469 hymnals Topics: Adoration and Praise First Line: I sing the mighty power of God Lyrics: 1 I sing the mighty power of God that made the mountains rise, that spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies. I sing the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day; the moon shines full at God’s command and all the stars obey. 2 I sing the goodness of the One that filled the earth with food; who formed the creatures with a word and then pronounced them good. O God, your wonders are displayed where’er I turn my eye; if I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky! 3 There’s not a plant or flower below but makes your glories known; and clouds arise and tempests blow, by order from your throne; while all that borrows life from you is ever in your care, and everywhere that I may be, you, God are present there. Omer Westendorf

1916 - 1997 Person Name: Omer Westendorf, 1916-1907 Topics: Adoration and Praise Author of "Sent Forth by God's Blessing" in Hymns for a Pilgrim People Omer Westendorf, one of the earliest lyricists for Roman Catholic liturgical music in English, died on October 22, 1997, at the age of eighty-one. Born on February 24, 1916, Omer got his start in music publishing after World War II, when he brought home for his parish choir in Cincinnati some of the Mass settings he had discovered in Holland. Interest in the new music being published in Europe led to his creation of the World Library of Sacred Music, initially a music-importing firm that brought much of this new European repertoire to U.S. parishes. Operating out of a garage in those early years, Omer often joked about the surprised expressions of visitors who stopped by and found a wide range of sheet music in various states of “storage” (read disarray). Later, as World Library Publications, the company began publishing some of its own music, including new works with English texts by some of those same Dutch composers, for example, Jan Vermulst. In 1955 World Library published the first edition of The Peoples Hymnal, which would become the People's Mass Book in 1964, one of the first hymnals to reflect the liturgical reforms proposed by Vatican II. Omer also introduced the music of Lucien Deiss to Catholic parishes through the two volumes of Biblical Hymns and Psalms. Using his own name and several pen names, Omer composed numerous compositions for liturgical use, though his best-known works may be the texts for the hymns “Where Charity and Love Prevail,” “Sent Forth by God’s Blessing,” and especially “Gift of Finest Wheat.” As he lay dying, his family and friends gathered around his bed to sing his text “Shepherd of Souls, in Love, Come, Feed Us.” NPM honored Omer as its Pastoral Musician of the Year in 1985. --liturgicalleaders.blogspot.com/2008 =========================== Pseudonyms: Paul Francis Mark Evans J. George Croly

1780 - 1860 Topics: Adoration and Praise Author of "Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart" in Christian Youth Hymnal Croly, George, LL.D., born in Dublin, Aug. 17, 1780, and educated at the Dublin University (M.A. 1804, LL.D. 1831). After taking Holy Orders, he laboured in Ireland till about 1810, when he took up his residence in London, and devoted himself to literature. In 1835 he succeeded to the united benefices of St. Stephen's, Walbrook, and St. Benet Sherehog, retaining the same till his death, which occurred suddenly in the public street, Holborn, Nov. 24, 1860. His prose publications, in addition to contributions to Blackwood's Magazine, were numerous, and dealt with biographical, historical, and scriptural subjects. His hymns were given in his— Psalms and Hymns for Public Worship. Written and compiled by the Rev. George Croly, LL.D. London Kendrick, 1854. This collection contained 25 psalms, 50 hymns, and 6 poems. Of these 10 psalms, 12 hymns, and the 6 poems bear Dr. Croly's initial. The following have come into common use mainly through Windle's Collection:— 1. Be still, be still, impatient soul. Patience. 2. Behold me, Lord, and if thou find. Lent. 3. Lift up your heads, ye gates of light. Ascension. 4. Lord, who hast sought us out, unsought. Public Worship. 5. Teach us, O Lord, this day. Sunday. 6. Thou, Lord of mercy and of might. Lent. All these date from 1854, with the exception of No. 6, which appeared in his Scenes from Scripture and other Poems, 1851. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
