Immortal Love, Forever Full

Author: J. G. Whittier Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 298 hymnals Scripture: Mark 5:27 Lyrics: 1 Immortal Love, forever full, forever flowing free, forever shared, forever whole, a never ebbing sea. 2 Our outward lips confess the name all other names above; love only knoweth whence it came, and comprehendeth love. 3 We may not climb the heav'nly steeps to bring the Lord Christ down; in vain we search the lowest deeps, for him no depths can drown. 4 But warm, sweet, tender, even yet a present help is he; and faith has still its Olivet, and love its Galilee. 5 The healing of his seamless dress is by our beds of pain; we touch him in life's throng and press, and we are whole again. 6 Alone, O love ineffable, thy saving name is given; to turn aside from thee is hell; to walk with thee is heaven. Heal Us, Emmanuel, Hear Our Prayer

Author: William Cowper Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 75 hymnals Scripture: Mark 5:25-34 Lyrics: 1. Heal us, Emmanuel, hear our prayer; we wait to feel thy touch; deep-wounded souls to thee repair, and Savior, we are such. 2. Our faith is feeble, we confess we faintly trust thy word; but wilt thou pity us the less? Be that far from thee, Lord! 3. Remember him who once applied with trembling for relief; "Lord, I believe," with tears he cried; "O help my unbelief!" 4. She, too, who touched thee in the press and healing virtue stole, was answered, "Daughter, go in peace: thy faith hath made thee whole." 5. Like her, with hopes and fears we come to touch thee if we may; O send us not despairing home; send none unhealed away. O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

Author: Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #306 (1998) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: Mark 5:21-43 Lyrics: 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace. 2 Jesus! the name that charms our fears and bids our sorrows cease; 'tis music in the sinner's ears, 'tis life, and health, and peace. 3 He speaks; and, listening to his voice, new life the dead receive; the mournful, broken hearts rejoice, the humble poor believe. 4 Hear him, ye deaf, ye voiceless ones, your loosened tongues employ; ye blind, behold your Saviour come, and leap, ye lame, for joy! 5 My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honours of thy name. All Praise to Thee, My God, This Night

Author: Thomas Ken, 1637-1711 Hymnal: Christian Worship #788 (2021) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Mark 5:35-43 Lyrics: 1 All praise to thee, my God, this night for all the blessings of the light. Keep me, O keep me, King of kings, beneath thine own almighty wings. 2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, the ill that I this day have done, that with the world, myself, and thee I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. 3 Teach me to live that I may dread the grave as little as my bed. Teach me to die that so I may rise glorious at the awefull day. 4 Oh, may my soul on thee repose and may sweet sleep mine eyelids close, sleep that shall me more vig'rous make to serve my God when I awake. 5 When in the night I sleepless lie, my soul with heav'nly thoughts supply; let no ill dreams disturb my rest, no pow'rs of darkness me distress. 6 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heav'nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. John L. Bell

b. 1949 Person Name: John L. Bell, 1949- Scripture: Mark 5:23 Author of "We Cannot Measure How You Heal" in Worship and Rejoice John Bell (b. 1949) was born in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, intending to be a music teacher when he felt the call to the ministry. But in frustration with his classes, he did volunteer work in a deprived neighborhood in London for a time and also served for two years as an associate pastor at the English Reformed Church in Amsterdam. After graduating he worked for five years as a youth pastor for the Church of Scotland, serving a large region that included about 500 churches. He then took a similar position with the Iona Community, and with his colleague Graham Maule, began to broaden the youth ministry to focus on renewal of the church’s worship. His approach soon turned to composing songs within the identifiable traditions of hymnody that began to address concerns missing from the current Scottish hymnal: "I discovered that seldom did our hymns represent the plight of poor people to God. There was nothing that dealt with unemployment, nothing that dealt with living in a multicultural society and feeling disenfranchised. There was nothing about child abuse…,that reflected concern for the developing world, nothing that helped see ourselves as brothers and sisters to those who are suffering from poverty or persecution." [from an interview in Reformed Worship (March 1993)] That concern not only led to writing many songs, but increasingly to introducing them internationally in many conferences, while also gathering songs from around the world. He was convener for the fourth edition of the Church of Scotland’s Church Hymnary (2005), a very different collection from the previous 1973 edition. His books, The Singing Thing and The Singing Thing Too, as well as the many collections of songs and worship resources produced by John Bell—some together with other members of the Iona Community’s “Wild Goose Resource Group,” —are available in North America from GIA Publications. Fred Pratt Green

1903 - 2000 Scripture: Mark 5:28 Author of "Here, Master, in This Quiet Place" in The Worshiping Church The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies. Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more." --Seven New Hymns of Hope , 1971.
