A Mighty Fortress is Our God

Author: Martin Luther Hymnal: Lutherförbundets SÄngbok #E142 (1913) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.5.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 A mighty Fortress is our God, A trusty Shield and Weapon; He helps us in our ev'ry need That hath us now o'ertaken. The old malignant foe Means us deadly woe: Deep guile and cruel might Are his dread arms in fight, On earth is not his equal. 2 With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the Valiant One Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye who this may be? Jesus Christ, 'tis He, As Lord of Hosts adored, Our only King and Lord, He holds the field forever. 3 Tho' devils all the world should fill, All watching to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill, They shall not overpow'r us. For this world's prince may still Scowl fiercely as he will, We need not be alarmed, For he is now disarmed: One little word o'erthrows him. 4 The Word they still shall let remain, Nor any thanks have for it; He's by our side upon the plain, With His good gifts and Spirit. Take they, then, what they will, Life, goods, all; and still, E'en when their worst is done, They yet have nothing won;-- The kingdom ours remaineth. Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's Head

Author: Johann Mentzer, 1658-1734; William J. Schaefer, 1891-1976 Hymnal: Christian Worship #861 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.5.6.6.7 Lyrics: 1 Lord Jesus Christ, the Church's head, you are her one foundation; in you she trusts, before you bows, and waits for your salvation. Built on this rock secure, your Church shall endure though all the world decay and all things pass away. O hear, O hear us, Jesus! 2 O Lord, let this your little flock, your name alone confessing, continue in your loving care, true unity possessing. Your sacraments, O Lord, and your saving Word to us e'er pure retain; grant that they may remain our only strength and comfort. 3 Help us to serve you evermore with hearts both pure and lowly; and may your Word, that light divine, shine on in splendor holy that we repentance show, in faith ever grow; the pow'r of sin destroy and evils that annoy. O make us faithful Christians. 4 And for your gospel let us dare to sacrifice all treasure; teach us to bear your blessed cross, to find in you all pleasure. O grant us steadfastness in joy and distress. Lord, for your mercy's sake, let us by grace partake of endless joy and glory.
