88. One By One We’re Gathering Home

1 I have wandered o’er the mountains
Till their beauty fill’d my soul;
I have watch’d the flowing fountains
Giving life to all below.
And the sparkling, flowing, water,
Down the rugged steep I see
Where the valley sweet embosoms
Till ‘tis lost in the great sea.

Refrain:
As the flowers fade away,
And the darkness veils the day,
Sadly, surely we are going,
One by one we’re gath’ring home.

2 I have wandered thro’ the valley
Fill’d with meadows’ sweet perfume,
I have found the sweetest lily
An immortelle there in bloom;
And it seemed that summer ever
Would my heart with gladness fill,
But the autumn winds are blowing,
And my heart beats cold and chill. [Refrain]

3 I have gone in youth’s bright morning
When the pulse of life was strong,
I have longed to strike with foemen
For the right, against the wrong,
In ambition’s strong endeavor,
I have vainly sought a part,
But the years are on me lying
Like a burden on my heart. [Refrain]
