Hail, thou once despisèd Jesus!

Author: John Bakewell (1721-1819); Martin Madan (1726-1790) Hymnal: Ancient and Modern #229 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Hymnal Title: Ancient and Modern Lyrics: 1 Hail, thou once despisèd Jesus! Hail, thou Galilean King! Thou didst suffer to release us; thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, thou universal Saviour, bearer of our sin and shame! By thy merit we find favour; life is given through thy name. 2 Paschal Lamb by God appointed, all our sins on thee were laid; by almighty love anointed, thou hast full atonement made. All thy people are forgiven through the virtue of thy blood; opened is the gate of heaven; reconciled are we with God. 3 Jesus, hail! Enthroned in glory, there for ever to abide; all the heavenly host adore thee, seated at thy Father's side. There for sinners thou art pleading, there thou dost our place prepare, ever for us interceding, till in glory we appear. There's a Wideness in God's Mercy

Author: Frederick W. Faber, 1814-1863 Hymnal: Breaking Bread (Vol. 39) #476 (2019) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Hymnal Title: Breaking Bread (Vol. 39) Lyrics: 1 There’s a wideness in God’s mercy Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in his justice Which is more than liberty. There is plentiful redemption In the blood that has been shed; There is joy for all the members In the sorrows of the Head. 2 For the love of God is broader Than the measures of the mind, And the heart of the Eternal Is most wonderfully kind. If our love were but more simple We should take him at his word, And our lives would be thanksgiving For the goodness of our Lord. 3 Troubled souls, why will you scatter Like a crowd of frightened sheep? Foolish hearts, why will you wander From a love so true and deep? There is welcome for the sinner And more graces for the good; There is mercy with the Savior; There is healing in his blood. Blessed Feasts of Blessed Martyrs

Author: John M. Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: Breaking Bread (Vol. 39) #711 (2019) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Hymnal Title: Breaking Bread (Vol. 39) Lyrics: 1 Blessed feasts of blessed martyrs, Holy women, holy men, With our love and admiration, Greet we your return again. Worthy deeds they wrought, and wonders, Worthy of the name they bore; We, with joyful praise and singing, Honor them for evermore. 2 Faith prevailing, hope unfailing, Loving Christ with single heart, Thus they, glorious and victorious, Bravely bore the martyr's part, By contempt of ev'ry anguish, By unyielding battle done; Victors at the last, they triumph, With the host of angels one. 3 Therefore, all that reign in glory, Faithful heirs with Christ on high, Join to ours your supplication When before Christ we draw nigh, Praying that, this life completed, All its fleeting moments past, By Christ's grace we may be worthy Of eternal bliss at last. Lord, We Hear Your Word with Gladness

Author: Margaret Clarkson Hymnal: Catholic Book of Worship III #444 (1994) Hymnal Title: Catholic Book of Worship III Lyrics: 1 Lord, we hear your word with gladness: You have spoken, we rejoice: Words of love and life and freedom, Help us make their truth our choice! Now in holy celebration For your word we worship you; Spoken, written, known in Jesus, Ours today to prove anew. 2 May we hear with understanding, By your Spirit taught and led; May the springs of all our being By your living word be fed; May our hearts accept with meekness All the grace your light makes known; May obedience mark our footsteps Till we make each word our own! 3 You have spoken: yours the fulness, Ours the wealth of this your word: Debtors, then, as living letters We must make your Gospel heard! By your Spirit’s pow'r transform us; Shed your saving light abroad Till our lives by love in action Show our world the truth of God!
