1890 - 1983 First Line: Creator God who gave the planets life Hymnal Number: 14 Author of "Creator God Who Gave the Planets Life" in 16 New Hymns On The Stewardship of the Environment [Ecology] Reid, William Watkins, Sr. (Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, October 15, 1890--February 18, 1983, Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania). Methodist. Parents were William Reid, a native of Moneymore, near Belfast, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry. Came to the United States in 1900. Attended New York University (bachelor's degree, 1915; master's degree in journalism, 1917). Served The Hymn Society as President, Executive Director, and Editor of The Hymn from 1966 to 1976. Authored the Hymn Society's 40th anniversary history, Sing with Spirit and Understanding. Also edited The Pastor's Journal for the Methodist church and worked as its director of the News Service of the Board of Missions. Also: Caulfield, Benjamin. --From DNAH Archives ============================== William Watkins Reid, of Whitestone, Long Island, was president of the Hymn Society of America from 1942 to 1945, and is now a member of its Executive Committee. Used the title of "My God is There, Controlling," the Society has published 65 of his hymns, and several others were published in the Society's "searches", for new hymns. Garriott (Mrs. Christopher T. Garriott) is a music teacher and church leader in Chevy Chase, Maryland. --New Hymns, Songs and Prayers for Church and Home, 1974. Used by permission. =================== Jean E. Garriott (Mrs. Christopher T. Garriott) is the wife of the minister of the St. Paul Community Church of Homewood, Illinois. She is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music, Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois. During the past fifteen years, she has conducted music clinics in Massachusetts, Colorado, and Ohio for the International Convention of Community Churches. She is well-known in the Chicago area for her hymn programs, given as piano talks. Four of her poems have appeared in The Christian, international magazine of the Disciples of Christ.
