God appointeth Afflictions

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 22 hymnals First Line: Not from relentless fate's dark womb Lyrics: 1 Not from relentless fate's dark womb, Or from the dust, our troubles come. No fickle chance presides o'er grief, To cause the pain, or send relief. 2 Look up, and see, ye sorrowing saints! The cause and cure of your complaints, Know, 'tis your heav'nly father's will: Bid ev'ry murmur then be still. 3 He sees, we need the painful yoke; Yet love directs his heaviest stroke. He takes no pleasure in our smart, But wounds to heal and cheer the heart. 4 Bless'd trials those, that cleanse from sin, And make the soul all pure within, Wean the fond mind from earthly toys, To seek and taste celestial joys! Jesus teaching the People

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 357 hymnals First Line: How sweetly flow'd the gospel's sound Lyrics: 1 How sweetly flow'd the gospel’s sound From lips of gentleness and grace, While list'ning thousands gathered round, And joy and rev'ence fill'd the place. 2 From heav’n he came, of heav’n he spoke, To heav'n he led his foll'wers’ way; Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke, Unveiling an immortal day. 3 "Come, wand'rers, to my Father’s home; Come, all ye weary ones, and rest!" Yes, sacred Teacher, we will come, Obey thee, love thee, and be blest. 4 Decay, then, tenements of dust! Pillars of earthly pride, decay! A nobler mansion waits the just, And Jesus has prepared the way. Topics: Christ His Mission and Works

The Christian's Charge

Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 1,351 hymnals First Line: A charge to keep I have Lyrics: 1 A charge to keep I have; A God to glorify; A never-dying soul to save, And fit it for the sky; To serve the present age; My calling to fulfill;-- O may it all my pow'rs engage, To do my Master's will! 2 Arm me with jealous care As in thy sight to live; And oh! thy servant, Lord, prepare, A strict account to give. Help me to watch and pray, And, on thyself rely: Assured, if I my trust betray, I shall forsaken die. Topics: The Christian His Conversion

The Spirituality of God

Hymnal: CHAP1845 #1 (1845) Meter: 8.8.8.8 First Line: Thou art, O God! a spirit pure Lyrics: 1 Thou art, O God! a spirit pure, Invisible to mortal eyes; Th'immortal, and the eternal King, The great, the good, the only wise. 2 Whilst nature changes, and her works Corrupt, decay, dissolve, and die, Thy essence pure no change shall see, Secure of immortality. 3 Thou great Invisible! what hand Can draw thy image spotless fair! To what in heaven, to what on earth, Can men th'immortal King compare! 4 Let stupid heathens frame their gods Of gold, and silver, wood and stone; Ours is the God that made the heavens; Jehovah he, and God alone. 5 My soul, thy purest homage pay, In truth and spirit him adore: More shall this please than sacrifice, Than outward forms delight him more. God supreme and self-sufficient

Hymnal: CHAP1845 #2 (1845) Meter: 8.8.8.8 First Line: What is our God, or what his name Lyrics: 1 What is our God, or what his name, Nor men can learn, nor angels teach; He dwells conceal'd in radiant flame, Where neither eyes nor thoughts can reach. 2 The spacious worlds of heavenly light, Compar'd with him, how short they fall! They are too dark, and he too bright; Nothing are they, and God is all. 3 He spoke that wondrous word, and lo! Creation arose at his command: Whirlwinds and seas their limits know, Bound in the hollow of his hand. 4 There rests the earth, there roll the spheres, There nature leans, and feels her prop: But his own self-sufficience bears The weight of his own glories up. 5 The tide of creatures ebbs and flows, Measuring their changes by the moon: No ebb his sea of glory knows: His age is one eternal noon. 6 Then fly, my song, an endless round, The lofty tune let Gabriel raise, All nature dwell upon the sound, But we can ne'er fulfil the praise. Unity of God

Hymnal: CHAP1845 #3 (1845) Meter: 8.8.8.8 First Line: Eternal God, almighty cause Lyrics: 1 Eternal God, almighty cause Of earth, and seas and worlds unknown; All things are subject to thy laws; All things depend on thee alone. 2 Thy glorious being singly stands, Of all within itself possest; By none control'd in thy commands, And in thyself completely blest. 3 To thee alone ourselves we owe; Let heav'n and earth due homage pay: All other gods we disavow, Deny their claims, renounce their sway. 4 In thee, O Lord, our hope shall rest, Fountain of peace and joy and love! Thy favor only makes us blest; Without thee all would nothing prove. 5 Worship to thee alone belongs: Worship to thee alone we give; Thine be our hearts, and thine our songs, And to thy glory we would live. 6 Spread thy great name through heathen lands; Their idol-deities dethrone; Subdue the world to thy commands, And reign as thou art, God alone.
