O Zion Lift a Mighty Voice

Author: D M Marshall Meter: Irregular with refrain Appears in 1 hymnal Tune Title: A MIGHTY VOICE First Line: Through Zion's wars, we have triumphant come Lyrics: 1 Through Zion's wars, we have triumphant come, through valleys and streams. We've crossed the mountains tall and high and some fell from their dreams But all the saints with pow'r prevailed in His strength we have not failed. Refrain: O Zion lift a mighty voice– we have cause to rejoice! O Zion lift a mighty voice– we have cause to rejoice! 2 Now we are here, through blood sweat and tears We have come through the night. Jesus Himself has cast away our fears and remains in the fight. So plant your feet, stand your ground. His perfect love and grace abound. [Refrain] 3 Joy evermore, we serve a risen king who is brightest and best. Lift holy hands give praise to Him and sing as His name we are blest. Soon things of life shall be past. Zion's goal is met at last. [Refrain] Topics: Zion Connectional Hymns Used With Tune: A MIGHTY VOICE

God Is Here

Author: Fred Pratt Green Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 47 hymnals Tune Title: ABBOTT'S LEIGH First Line: God is here! As we your people Lyrics: 1 God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of his Spirit into open minds and hearts. 2 Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; here are table, font, and pulpit; here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech, here, in newness and renewal, God the Spirit comes to each. 3 Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here, as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us, as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore. 4 Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive; we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe! Topics: Adoration and Praise Used With Tune: ABBOTT'S LEIGH

It May Not Be Our Lot to Wield

Author: John G Whittier, 1807-1892 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 38 hymnals Tune Title: ABENDS Lyrics: 1 It may not be our lot to wield The sickle in the ripened field; Nor ours to hear, on summer eves, The reaper's song among the sheaves. 2 Yet where our duty's task is wrought In unison with God's great thought, The near and future blend in one, And whatsoe'er is willed, is done. 3 And ours the grateful service whence Comes, day by day, the recompense; The hope, the trust, the purpose stayed, The fountain, and the noonday shade. 4 And were this life the utmost span, The only end and aim of man, Better the toil of fields like these Than waking dream and slothful ease. 5 But life, though falling like our grain, Like that revives and springs again; And, early called, how blest are they Who wait in heaven their harvest day! AMEN. Topics: The Call to Service Used With Tune: ABENDS

Fred Pratt Green

1903 - 2000 Tune Title: ABBOTT'S LEIGH Hymnal Number: 5 Author of "God Is Here" in The A.M.E. Zion Hymnal The name of the Rev. F. Pratt Green is one of the best-known of the contemporary school of hymnwriters in the British Isles. His name and writings appear in practically every new hymnal and "hymn supplement" wherever English is spoken and sung. And now they are appearing in American hymnals, poetry magazines, and anthologies. Mr. Green was born in Liverpool, England, in 1903. Ordained in the British Methodist ministry, he has been pastor and district superintendent in Brighton and York, and now served in Norwich. There he continued to write new hymns "that fill the gap between the hymns of the first part of this century and the 'far-out' compositions that have crowded into some churches in the last decade or more." --Seven New Hymns of Hope , 1971.
