Authors, composers, editors, etc.

Anonymous

Person Name: Anon. Hymnal Number: 86 Translator (v. 1) of "Morning Star" in An American Christmas Harp In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

Supply Belcher

1751 - 1836 Person Name: Supply Belcher (1751-1826) Hymnal Number: 52 Composer of "CAROL" in An American Christmas Harp Samuel (or Supply) Belcher of Farmington,Me., published 1794 "The Harmony of Maine;" an original composition of psalm and hymn tunes; was a teacher of music. This man, or one of his name, published at Hallowell Me., where he then resided, 1830, "Harmony of Music." A Dictionary of Musical Information by John W. Moore, Boston: Oliver, Ditson & Company, 1876

William Billings

1746 - 1800 Person Name: William Billings (1746-1800) Hymnal Number: 32 Composer of "BETHLEHEM" in An American Christmas Harp William Billings (b. 1746; d. 1800) was an American choral composer, thought by some to be the father of American choral music. His father died when William was 14, and he was forced to drop all formal education and take up tanning to get by. With no formal musical training he began to compose, and his songs were well-loved and traveled quickly. However, due to unsubstantial copyright laws, Billings received hardly a penny from the publication of his music. After a period of fame and prosperity, his music was forgotten, and his last decade was one of decline. Married with six children, he died in poverty, though his music would be resurrected after his death and sung to this day. Laura de Jong
