Oh, What Their Joy

Author: Peter Abelard 1079-1142; John Mason Neale, 1818-1866 Hymnal: CWH2021 #887 (2021) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Person Name: Peter Abelard 1079-1142 First Line: Oh, what their joy and their glory must be Lyrics: 1 Oh, what their joy and their glory must be, those endless Sabbaths the blessed ones see! Crowns for the valiant, to weary ones rest; God shall be all, and in all ever blest. 2 In new Jerusalem joy shall be found, blessings of peace shall forever abound; wish and fulfillment are not severed there, nor the things prayed for come short of the prayer. 3 We, where no troubles distraction can bring, safely the anthems of Zion shall sing; while for your grace, Lord, their voices of praise your blessed people shall evermore raise. 4 Now let us worship our Lord and our King, joyfully raising our voices to sing: praise to the Father, and praise to the Son, praise to the Spirit, to God, Three in One. When All Your Mercies, O My God

Author: Joseph Addison, 1672-1719 Hymnal: CWH2021 #604 (2021) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Person Name: Joseph Addison, 1672-1719 Lyrics: 1 When all your mercies, O my God, my waking soul surveys, transported with the view, I'm lost in wonder, love, and praise. 2 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts my daily thanks employ, nor is the least a cheerful heart that tastes these gifts with joy. 3 Through ev'ry passing phase of life your goodness I'll pursue and after death, in distant worlds, the glorious theme renew. 4 Through all eternity to you a joyful song I'll raise, but, oh, eternity's too short to utter all your praise. The Will of God Is Always Best

Author: Albrecht von Preussen, 1490-1568 Hymnal: CWH2021 #838 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Person Name: Albrecht von Preussen, 1490-1568 Lyrics: 1 The will of God is always best and shall be done forever; and they who trust in him are blest; he will forsake them never. He helps indeed in time of need; he chastens with forbearing. They who depend on God, their friend, shall not be left despairing. 2 God is my comfort and my trust, my hope and life abiding; and to his counsel, wise and just, I yield, in him confiding. The very hairs, his Word declares, upon my head he numbers. By night and day God is my stay; he never sleeps nor slumbers. 3 Lord, this I ask, O hear my plea, deny me not this favor: when Satan sorely troubles me, then do not let me waver. O guard me well, my fear dispel, fulfill your faithful saying: all who believe by grace receive an answer to their praying. 4 When life's brief course on earth is run and I this world am leaving, grant me to say, "Your will be done," your faithful Word believing. My heav'nly Friend, I now commend my soul into your keeping, o'er sin and hell and death as well in you the vict'ry reaping. All Men Living Are But Mortal

Author: J. G. Albinus, 1624-1679; Catherine Winkworth, 1827-1878; Unknown Hymnal: CWH2021 #840 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7.7 Person Name: J. G. Albinus, 1624-1679 Lyrics: 1 All men living are but mortal and will surely fade as grass; only through death's gloomy portal to eternal life we pass. When this body here has perished, then will heav'nly joys be cherished where the saints, in glorious dress, live and reign in righteousness. 2 Therefore, when my God shall choose it, willingly I'll yield my life, nor will grieve that I should lose it, with its sorrow, pain, and strife. In my dear Redeemer's merit peace has found my troubled spirit, and in death my comfort this: Jesus' death my source of bliss. 3 Jesus for my sake descended my salvation to obtain: death and hell for me are ended, peace and hope are now my gain. With great joy I leave earth's sadness for the home of heav'nly gladness, where I shall forever see God, the Holy Trinity. 4 There is joy beyond our telling, where so many saints have gone; thousands, thousands, there are dwelling, worshiping before the throne. There the angel hosts are shining, evermore in chorus joining: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord! Triune God, by all adored!" 5 Patriarchs of sacred story and the prophets there are found; twelve apostles, bright with glory, on twelve seats are there enthroned. All the saints are there ascended age on age, through time extended, there in blissful concert sing hallelujahs to their King. 6 O Jerusalem, how glorious are your heav'nly mansions fair! I can hear the tones victorious ever sweetly sounding there. Oh, the bliss that there surprises! Look, my soul, the sun now rises, and the breaking day I see that shall never end for me. 7 Now I see what here was told me, see that wondrous glory shine, feel the spotless robes enfold me, know a golden crown is mine. Thus before the throne so glorious now I stand, a soul victorious, filled with purest joy and peace that in Christ shall never cease. Lord of Glory, You Have Bought Us

Author: Eliza S. Alderson, 1818-1889 Hymnal: CWH2021 #767 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Person Name: Eliza S. Alderson, 1818-1889 Lyrics: 1 Lord of glory, you have bought us with your life-blood as the price, never grudging for the lost ones that tremendous sacrifice; and with that have freely given blessings countless as the sand to th'unthankful and the evil with your own unsparing hand. 2 Grant us hearts, dear Lord, to give you gladly, freely, of your own. With the sunshine of your goodness melt our thankless hearts of stone till our cold and selfish natures, warmed by you, at length believe that more happy and more blessed 'tis to give than to receive. 3 Wondrous honor you have given to our humblest charity in your own mysterious sentence, "You have done it all for me." Can it be, O gracious Master, that you need what we can do, saying by your poor and needy, "Give as I have giv'n to you"? 4 Lord of glory, you have bought us with your life-blood as the price, never grudging for the lost ones that tremendous sacrifice. Give us faith to trust you boldly, hope, to stay our souls on you; but, oh, best of all your graces, with your love our love renew. Once in Royal David's City

Author: Cecil F. Alexander, 1818-1895 Hymnal: CWH2021 #343 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Person Name: Cecil F. Alexander, 1818-1895 Lyrics: 1 Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ, her little child. 2 He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor and mean and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy. 3 And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child, so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heav'n above, and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. 4 Not in that poor, lowly stable with the oxen standing by we shall see him, but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high. Then like stars his children crowned, all in white, his praise will sound. Topics: Christmas Scripture: Luke 2:4-7 Languages: English Tune Title: IRBY

Jesus Calls Us O'er the Tumult

Author: Cecil F. Alexander, 1818-1895 Hymnal: CWH2021 #711 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Person Name: Cecil F. Alexander, 1818-1895 Lyrics: 1 Jesus calls us o'er the tumult of our life's wild, restless sea; day by day his voice invites me, saying "Christian, follow me!" 2 As the first disciples heard it by the Galilean lake, turned from home and toil and kindred, leaving all for his dear sake. 3 Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying "Christian, love me more." 4 In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these." 5 Jesus calls us! In your mercy, Savior, help us hear your call; give our hearts to your obedience, serve and love you best of all! Topics: Discipleship Scripture: Mark 1:16-20 Languages: English Tune Title: STUTTGART

Come, You Thankful People, Come

Author: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Hymnal: CWH2021 #491 (2021) Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Person Name: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Lyrics: 1 Come, you thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home. All is safely gathered in ere the winter storms begin. God, our maker, shall provide for our wants to be supplied. Come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home. 2 All the world is God's own field, fruit unto his praise to yield; wheat and weeds together sown, unto joy or sorrow grown. First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear. Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. 3 For the Lord our God shall come and shall take his harvest home, from his field shall in that day all offenses purge away, give his angels charge at last in the fire the weeds to cast, but the fruitful ears to store in his garner evermore. 4 Even so, Lord, quickly come to your final harvest home; gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin, there, forever purified, in your presence to abide. Come with all your angels, come; raise the glorious harvest home. Topics: Second Coming Scripture: Matthew 13:24-30 Languages: English Tune Title: ST. GEORGE'S, WINDSOR

We Walk by Faith

Author: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Hymnal: CWH2021 #830 (2021) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Person Name: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 First Line: We walk by faith and not by sight Lyrics: 1 We walk by faith, and not by sight, no gracious words we hear from him who spoke as none e’er spoke, but we believe him near. 2 We may not touch his hands and side, nor follow where he trod; but in his promise we rejoice and cry, “My Lord and God!” 3 Help then, O Lord, our unbelief; and may our faith abound to call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found. 4 For you, O resurrected Lord, are found in means divine: beneath the water and the Word, beneath the bread and wine. 5 Lord, when our life of faith is done, in realms of clearer light we may behold you as you are with full and endless sight. Sweet the Moments, Rich in Blessing

Author: James Allen, 1734-1804; Walter Shirley, 1725-1786 Hymnal: CWH2021 #400 (2021) Meter: 8.7.8.7 Person Name: James Allen, 1734-1804 Lyrics: 1 Sweet the moments, rich in blessing, which before the cross we spend, life and health and peace possessing from the sinner's dying friend. 2 Here we rest in wonder, viewing all our sins on Jesus laid; here we see redemption flowing from the sacrifice he made. 3 Here we find the dawn of heaven while upon the cross we gaze, see our trespasses forgiven, and our songs of triumph raise. 4 Oh, that, near the cross abiding, we may to the Savior cleave, naught with him our hearts dividing, all for him content to leave! 5 Lord, in loving contemplation fix our hearts and eyes on you till we taste your full salvation and your unveiled glory view.
