Glorious things of thee are spoken

Author: John Newton, 1725-1807 Hymnal: Common Praise #435a (2000) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: Zephaniah 3:14 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode. On the Rock of ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage: grace which, like the Lord the giver, never fails from age to age? *3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus they march, the pillar leading, light by night and shade by day; daily on the manna feeding which he gives them when they pray. 4 Saviour, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name. Fading is the worldling's pleasure, all his boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know. Our salvation near

Author: A. M. Toplady Hymnal: Laudes Domini #337 (1888) Scripture: Zephaniah 3:17 First Line: Your harps, ye trembling saints Lyrics: 1 Your harps, ye trembling saints, Down from the willows take: Loud to the praise of love divine Bid every string awake. 2 Though in a foreign land, We are not far from home; And nearer to our house above We every moment come. 3 His grace will to the end Stronger and brighter shine; Nor present things, nor things to come, Shall quench the spark divine. 4 When we in darkness walk, Nor feel the heavenly flame, Then is the time to trust our God, And rest upon his name. 5 Soon shall our doubts and fears Subside at his control; His loving-kindness shall break through The midnight of the soul. 6 Blest is the man, O God, Who stays himself on thee; Who waits for thy salvation, Lord, Shall thy salvation see.
