Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 20 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Used With Tune: ES IST DAS HEIL Text Sources: Tr. composite

Begin, my tongue, some heavenly theme

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 299 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 Begin, my tongue, some heavenly theme and speak some boundless thing, the mighty works or mightier name, of our eternal king. 2 Tell of his wondrous faithfulness, and sound his power abroad; sing the sweet promise of his grace and our fulfilling God. 3 His very word of grace is strong as that which built the skies; the voice that rolls the stars along speaks all the promises. 4 He said, "Let wide the heaven be spread,' and heaven was stretched abroad; 'Abram, I'll be your God,' he said and he was Abram's God. 5 O might I hear your heavenly tongue but whisper, 'You are mine'; those gentle words should raise my song to notes almost divine. 6 How would my leaping heart rejoice, and think my heaven secure! I trust the all-creating voice, and faith desires no more. O love how deep, how broad, how high!

Author: Benjamin Webb, 1819-85; Thomas à Kempis, 1379-1471 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 139 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4:13-25 Lyrics: 1 O love how deep, how broad, how high! it fills the heart with ecstasy that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals’ sake. 2 He sent no angel to our race of higher or of lower place but wore the robe of human frame himself, and to this lost world came. 3 For us he was baptized, and bore his holy fast, and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew; for us the tempter overthrew. 4 For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought, by words and signs and actions, thus still seeking not himself but us. 5 For us to wicked hands betrayed, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us at length gave up his breath. 6 For us he rose from death again, for us he went on high to reign, for us he sent his Spirit here to guide, to strengthen and to cheer. 7 To him whose boundless love has won salvation for us through his Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity.
