How Can I Keep from Singing

Author: Robert Lowry, 1826-1899; Doris Plenn Meter: 8.7.8.7 with refrain Appears in 144 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4 First Line: My life flows on in endless song Refrain First Line: No storm can shake my inmost calm Lyrics: 1 My life flows on in endless song; Above earth’s lamentation. I hear the real though far-off hymn That hails a new creation. Refrain: No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing? 2 Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing; It sounds and echoes in my soul; How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] 3 What though the tempest 'round me roar, I hear the truth it liveth. What though the darkness 'round me close, Songs in the night it giveth. [Refrain] 4 When tyrants tremble, sick with fear, And hear their death knells ringing; When friends rejoice both far and near, How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] 5 The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, A fountain ever springing. All things are mine since I am his; How can I keep from singing? Not What These Hands Have Done

Author: Horatius Bonar, 1808-89 Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 118 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4:1-5 Lyrics: 1 Not what these hands have done Can save this guilty soul; Not what this toiling flesh has borne Can make my spirit whole. 2 Not what I feel or do Can give me peace with God; Not all my prayers and sighs and tears Can bear my awful load. 3 Thy work alone, O Christ, Can ease this weight of sin; Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, Can give me peace within. 4 Thy love to me, O God, Not mine, O Lord to Thee, Can rid me of this dark unrest And set my spirit free. 5 Thy grace alone, O God, To me can pardon speak; Thy pow'r alone, O Son of God, Can this sore bondage break. 6 I bless the Christ of God, I rest on love divine, And with unfalt'ring lip and heart I call this Savior mine. Salvation unto Us has Come

Author: Paul Speratus Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.8.7 Appears in 20 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4 Lyrics: 1 Salvation unto us has come By God's free grace and favor; Good works cannot avert our doom, They help and save us never. Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, Who did for all the world atone; He is our one Redeemer. 2 What God did in His Law demand And none to Him could render Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand For man, the vile offender. Our flesh has not those pure desires The spirit of the Law requires, And lost is our condition. 3 It was a false, misleading dream That God His Law had given That sinners could themselves redeem And by their works gain heaven. The Law is but a mirror bright To bring the inbred sin to light That lurks within our nature. 4 From sin our flesh could not abstain, Sin held its sway unceasing; The task was useless and in vain, Our guilt was e'er increasing. None can remove sin's poisoned dart Or purify our guileful heart-- So deep is our corruption. 5 Yet as the Law must be fulfilled Or we must die despairing, Christ came and has God's anger stilled, Our human nature sharing. He hath for us the Law obeyed And thus His Father's vengeance stayed Which over us impended. 6 Since Christ has full atonement made And brought to us salvation, Each Christian therefore may be glad And build on this foundation. Thy grace alone, dear Lord, I plead, Thy death is now my life indeed, For Thou have paid my ransom. 7 Let me not doubt, but trust in Thee, Thy Word cannot be broken: Thy call rings out, "Come unto Me!" No falsehood hast Thou spoken. Baptized into Thy precious name, My faith cannot be put to shame, And I shall never perish. 8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin And makes us conscience-stricken; The Gospel then doth enter in The sinful soul to quicken. Come to the cross, trust Christ, and live; The Law no peace can ever give, No comfort and no blessing. 9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone And rests in Him unceasing; And by its fruits true faith is known, With love and hope increasing. For faith alone doth justify; Works serve thy neighbor and supply The proof that faith is living. 10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and praise To Father, Son, and Spirit, The God who saved us by His grace-- All glory to His merit! O Triune God in heaven above, Who has revealed Thy saving love; Thy blessed name be hallowed. Amen. Topics: Faith and Justification Used With Tune: ES IST DAS HEIL Text Sources: Tr. composite

Not all the blood of beasts

Author: Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 600 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4:5 Lyrics: 1 Not all the blood of beasts, On Jewish altars slain, Could give the guilty conscience peace, Or wash away the stain. 2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb, Takes all our sins away-- A sacrifice of nobler name, And richer blood than they. 3 My faith would lay her hand On that dear head of thine, While like a penitent I stand, And there confess my sin. 4 Believing, we rejoice To see the curse remove; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And sing his bleeding love. Jesus, thy blood and righteousness

Author: J. Wesley Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 498 hymnals Scripture: Romans 4:5 Lyrics: 1 Jesus, thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress: 'Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head. 2 Bold shall I stand in thy great day,-- For who aught to my charge shall lay Fully absolved through these I am-- From sin and fear, from guilt and shame. 3 The holy, meek, unspotted Lamb, Who from the Father's bosom came,-- Who died for me, e'en me t' atone,-- Now for my Lord and God I own. 4 Lord, I believe thy precious blood, Which, at the mercy-seat of God, For ever doth for sinners plead, For me, e'en for my soul, was shed. 5 Lord, I believe were sinners more Than sands upon the ocean shore, Thou hadst for all a ransom paid, For all a full atonement made.
