Psalm 63 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 387 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63:1-5 First Line: Early, my God, without delay Lyrics: Early, my God, without delay, I haste to seek thy face; My thirsty spirit faints away Without thy cheering grace. So pilgrims on the scorching sand, Beneath a burning sky, Long for a cooling stream at hand, And they must drink or die. I've seen thy glory and thy power Through all thy temple shine; My God, repeat that heav'nly hour, That vision so divine. Not all the blessings of a feast Can please my soul so well, As when thy richer grace I taste, And in thy presence dwell. Not life itself, with all her joys, Can my best passions move, Or raise so high my cheerful voice, As thy forgiving love. Thus till my last expiring day I'll bless my God and King; Thus will I lift my hands to pray, And tune my lips to sing. Topics: Meditation; Lord's Day Morning; Morning of a sabbath; Delight in God; Seeking God; Longing after God; Worship absence from it; Converse with God; Love of God better than life; Midnight thoughts; Worship public

Psalm 63

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 272 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63 First Line: Great God, indulge my humble claim Lyrics: Great God, indulge my humble claim, Thou art my hope, my joy, my rest; The glories that compose thy name Stand all engaged to make me blest. Thou great and good, thou just and wise, Thou art my Father and my God; And I am thine by sacred ties; Thy son, thy servant, bought with blood With heart, and eyes, and lifted hands, For thee I long, to thee I look, As travellers in thirsty lands Pant for the cooling water-brook. With early feet I love t' appear Among thy saints, and seek thy face; Oft have I seen thy glory there, And felt the power of sovereign grace. Not fruits nor wines that tempt our taste, Nor all the joys our senses know, Could make me so divinely blest, Or raise my cheerful passions so. My life itself without thy love No taste of pleasure could afford; 'Twould but a tiresome burden prove, If I were banish'd from the Lord. Amidst the wakeful hours of night, When busy cares afflict my head, One thought of thee gives new delight, And adds refreshment to my bed. I'll lift my hands, I'll raise my voice, While I have breath to pray or praise; This work shall make my heart rejoice, And spend the remnant of my days. Topics: Meditation; Lord's Day Morning; Morning of a sabbath; Delight in God; Seeking God; Longing after God; Worship absence from it; Converse with God; Love of God better than life; Midnight thoughts; Worship public

Psalm 63

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 196 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63 First Line: My God, permit my tongue Lyrics: My God, permit my tongue This joy, to call thee mine; And let my early cries prevail To taste thy love divine. My thirsty, fainting soul Thy mercy doth implore; Not travellers in desert lands Can pant for water more. Within thy churches, Lord, I long to find my place; Thy power and glory to behold, And feel thy quick'ning grace. For life without thy love No relish can afford; No joy can be compared to this, To serve and please the Lord. To thee I'll lift my hands, And praise thee while I live; Not the rich dainties of a feast Such food or pleasure give. In wakeful hours at night I call my God to mind; I think how wise thy counsels are, And all thy dealings kind. Since thou hast been my help, To thee my spirit flies, And on thy watchful providence My cheerful hope relies. The shadow of thy wings My soul in safety keeps; I follow where my Father leads, And he supports my steps. Psalm 63: Lord, thee my God, I'll early seek

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 27 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63 First Line: Lord, thee my God, I'll early seek: Lyrics: 1Lord, thee my God, I’ll early seek: my soul doth thirst for thee; My flesh longs in a dry parch’d land, wherein no waters be: 2That I thy power may behold, and brightness of thy face, As I have seen thee heretofore within thy holy place. 3Since better is thy love than life, my lips thee praise shall give. 4I in thy name will lift my hands, and bless thee while I live. 5Ev’n as with marrow and with fat my soul shall filled be; Then shall my mouth with joyful lips sing praises unto thee: 6When I do thee upon my bed remember with delight, And when on thee I meditate in watches of the night. 7In shadow of thy wings I’ll joy; for thou mine help hast been. 8My soul thee follows hard; and me thy right hand doth sustain. 9Who seek my soul to spill shall sink down to earth’s lowest room. 10They by the sword shall be cut off, and foxes’ prey become. 11Yet shall the king in God rejoice, and each one glory shall That swear by him: but stopp’d shall be the mouth of liars all.

O God, Thou Art My God Alone

Author: James Montgomery Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 131 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63 Lyrics: 1 O God, thou art my God alone; early to thee my soul shall cry, a pilgrim in a land unknown, a thirty land whose springs are dry. 2 Yet thro' this rough and thorny maze I follow hard on thee, my God; thy hand unseen upholds my ways; I safely tread where thou hast trod. 3 Thee in the watches of the night when I remember on my bed, thy presence makes the darkness light; thy guardian wings are round my head. 4 Better than life itself thy love, dearer than all beside to me; for whom have I in heav'n above, or what on earth, compared with thee? 5 Praise with my heart, my mind, my voice, for all thy mercy I will give; my soul shall still in God rejoice; my tongue shall bless thee while I live. Psalm 63 Part 2

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 62 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63:6-10 First Line: 'Twas in the watches of the night Lyrics: 'Twas in the watches of the night I thought upon thy power, I kept thy lovely face in sight Amidst the darkest hour. My flesh lay resting on my bed, My soul arose on high: "My God, my life, my hope," I said, "Bring thy salvation nigh." My spirit labors up thine hill, And climbs the heav'nly road; But thy right hand upholds me still, While I pursue my God. Thy mercy stretches o'er my head The shadow of thy wings; My heart rejoices in thine aid, My tongue awakes and sings. But the destroyers of my peace Shall fret and rage in vain; The tempter shall for ever cease, And all my sins be slain. Thy sword shall give my foes to death, And send them down to dwell In the dark caverns of the earth, Or to the deeps of hell. O LORD, My God, Most Earnestly

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 20 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 63 Lyrics: 1 O LORD, my God, most earnestly I seek your holy face, within your house again to see the glories of your grace. Apart from you I long and thirst, and naught can satisfy; I wander in a desert land where all the streams are dry. 2 The loving-kindness of my God is more than life to me, so I will praise you all my days and pray continually. In you my soul is satisfied, my darkness turns to light, and joyful meditations fill the watches of the night. 3 Beneath the shadow of your wings I sing my joy and praise. Your right hand is my strong support through troubled nights and days. All those who seek my life will fall; my life is in your hand. God's king and people will rejoice; in victory they will stand.
