A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Author: Martin Luther; Frederick Henry Hedge Meter: 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 Appears in 674 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 46 Lyrics: 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing. You ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same; and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4 That Word above all earthly powers– no thanks to them– abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever! Psalm 46 Part 1

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 461 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 46 First Line: God is the refuge of his saints Lyrics: God is the refuge of his saints, When storms of sharp distress invade Ere we can offer our complaints, Behold him present with his aid. Let mountains from their seats be hurled Down to the deep, and buried there, Convulsions shake the solid world, Our faith shall never yield to fear. Loud may the troubled ocean roar, In sacred peace our souls abide, While every nation, every shore, Trembles, and dreads the swelling tide. There is a stream, whose gentle flow Supplies the city of our God; Life, love, and joy still gliding through, And wat'ring our divine abode. That sacred stream, thine holy word, That all our raging fear controls: Sweet peace thy promises afford, And give new strength to fainting souls. Zion enjoys her Monarch's love, Secure against a threat'ning hour; Nor can her firm foundations move, Built on his truth, and armed with power. Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 50 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 46 First Line: God is our refuge and our strength Lyrics: 1God is our refuge and our strength, in straits a present aid; 2Therefore, although the earth remove, we will not be afraid: Though hills amidst the seas be cast; 3Though waters roaring make, And troubled be; yea, though the hills, by swelling seas do shake. 4A river is, whose streams do glad the city of our God; The holy place, wherein the Lord most high hath his abode. 5God in the midst of her doth dwell; nothing shall her remove: The Lord to her an helper will, and that right early, prove. 6The heathen rag’d tumultuously, the kingdoms moved were: The Lord God uttered his voice, the earth did melt for fear. 7The Lord of hosts upon our side doth constantly remain: The God of Jacob’s our refuge, us safely to maintain. 8Come, and behold what wondrous works have by the Lord been wrought; Come, see what desolations he on the earth hath brought. 9Unto the ends of all the earth wars into peace he turns: The bow he breaks, the spear he cuts, in fire the chariot burns. 10Be still, and know that I am God; among the heathen I Will be exalted; I on earth will be exalted high. 11Our God, who is the Lord of hosts, is still upon our side; The God of Jacob our refuge for ever will abide.

Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 22 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 46 Lyrics: 1 God is our refuge and our strength, our ever-present aid, and therefore, though the earth be moved, we will not be afraid though hills into the seas be cast, though foaming waters roar, though all the mighty billows shake the mountains on the shore. 2 A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, the holy place wherein the LORD Most High has his abode. Since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand; for God will hasten to her aid when trouble is at hand. 3 The nations rage, the kingdoms move, but when his voice is heard, earth melts with trembling fear before the thunder of his word. The LORD of hosts is on our side, our safety to secure; the God of Jacob is for us a refuge strong and sure. 4 O come and see what wondrous works the hand of God has done; come, see what desolation great he brings beneath the sun. In every corner of the earth he causes wars to cease; the weapons of the strong destroyed, he makes abiding peace. 5 "Be still and know that I am God, the LORD whom all must claim; and every nation of the earth shall magnify my name." Crown Him with Many Crowns

Author: Matthew Bridges Meter: 6.6.8.6 D Appears in 793 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 46:9 Lyrics: 1 Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne; hark! how the heav'nly anthem drowns all music but its own; awake, my soul, and sing of him who dies for thee, and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity. 2 Crown him the Lord of love, behold his hands and side, rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified: no angel in the sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright. 3 Crown him the Lord of years, the Potentate of time; creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime: all hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou hast died for me; thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity. Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,288 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 46:4 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; he, whose word cannot be broken, formed thee for his own abode; on the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, thou mayst smile at all thy foes. 2 See the streams of living water springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters, and all fear of want remove; who can faint while such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage, grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in their Redeemer's blood, Jesus, whom their souls rely on, makes them kings and priests to God. 'Tis his love his people raises over self to reign as kings, and as priests, his solemn praises each for a thank-off'ring brings. 4 Savior, if of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity-- I will glory in thy name; fading are the worldling's pleasures, all their boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasure none but Zion's children know. Topics: City of God; Processional Hymns Used With Tune: ABBOT'S LEIGH
