Psalm 20

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 104 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 20 First Line: Now may the God of power and grace Lyrics: Now may the God of power and grace Attend his people's humble cry! Jehovah hears when Isr'el prays, And brings deliverance from on high. The name of Jacob's God defends Better than shields or brazen walls; He from his sanctuary sends Succor and strength, when Zion calls. Well he remembers all our sighs, His love exceeds our best deserts; His love accepts the sacrifice Of humble groans and broken hearts. In his salvation is our hope, And, in the name of Isr'el's God, Our troops shall lift their banners up, Our navies spread their flags abroad. Some trust in horses trained for war, And some of chariots make their boasts: Our surest expectations are From thee, the Lord of heav'nly hosts. [O may the memory of thy name Inspire our armies for the fight! Our foes shall fall and die with shame, Or quit the field with shameful flight.] Now save us, Lord, from slavish fear, Now let our hopes be firm and strong, Till the salvation shall appear, And joy and triumph raise the song. All my hope on God is founded

Author: Joachim Neander (1650-1680); Robert Bridges (1844-1930) Meter: 8.7.8.7.3.3.7 Appears in 69 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 20:7-8 Lyrics: 1 All my hope on God is founded, all my trust he will renew; safe through change and chance he guides me, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own. 2 Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray God's trust; though with care and toil we build them, tower and temple fall to dust. But God's power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3 God's great goodness lasts for ever, deep his wisdom passing thought: splendour, light, and life attend him, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore, from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. 4 Day by day the mighty Giver showers gifts on us below; his desire our souls delight in, pleasure leads us where we go. See love stand at his hand, joy awaits at his command! 5 Still from earth to God in heaven sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Hear Christ call one and all: those who follow shall not fall. Topics: Our Response to God in adoration and gratitude; Change; Hope; Providence Used With Tune: MICHAEL

The Lord to thy request attend

Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 20 Lyrics: 1 The Lord to thy Request attend, and hear thee in distress; the Name of Jacob's God defend, and grant thy arms success. 2 To aid thee from on High repair, and Strength from Sion give; 3 Remember all thy Off'rings there; thy Sacrifice receive. 4 To compass thy own Heart's Desire thy counsels still direct; May kindly all Events conspire to bring them to Effect. 5 To thy Salvation, Lord, for Aid, we chearfully repair, With Banners in thy Name display'd; "The Lord accept thy Pray'r." 6 Our Hopes are fix'd, that now the Lord our Sov'reign will defend; From Heav'n resistless Aid afford, and to his Pray'r attend. 7 Some trust in Steeds for War design'd, on Chariots some rely; Against them all, we'll call to mind the Pow'r of God most High. 8 But, from their Steeds and Chariots thrown, behold them, thro' the Plain, Disorder'd, broke, and trampled down, whilst firm our Troops remain. 9 Still save us, Lord, and still proceed our rightful Cause to bless; Hear, King of Heav'n, in Times of Need, the Pray'rs that we address.

In the Day of Need

Author: Christopher M. Idle Meter: 12.9.12.11 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 20 First Line: In the day of need may your answer be the LORD Lyrics: 1 In the day of need may your answer be the LORD; may the God of Jacob strengthen you. May he send you help from his high and holy place, and support you for the glory of his name. 2 May the LORD God grant you success in all your plans; may he give you all your heart's desire. May we sing for joy when we see the battle won, when the LORD has heard and answered every prayer. 3 Now I know that God will encourage those he loves; he will hear and answer from on high. Not a word shall fail of the promise he has made, nor the works of his victorious right hand. 4 There are some who boast of the weapons of the world, but the power of God is all our pride. The Star-Spangled Banner

Author: Francis Scott Key Meter: Irregular Appears in 441 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 20:7 First Line: O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light Lyrics: 1. O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 2. O thus be it ever, when free men shall stand Between their loved homes and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just; And this be our motto: "In God is our trust!" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Used With Tune: NATIONAL ANTHEM
