Unless the Lord the House Shall Build

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 21 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 127 Lyrics: 1 Unless the Lord the house shall build, The weary builders toil in vain; Unless the Lord the city shield, The guards a useless watch maintain. 2 In vain you rise ere morning break, And late your nightly vigils keep, And weary days of toil partake; For God's belovèd there is sleep. 3 Yes, children are a great reward, A gift from God in very truth; As quiver full of arrows stored Are children given in days of youth. 4 How blest are those whose lives are cheered By children's growth in strength and grace. Within their house no foes are feared, For God keeps watch within that place. Used With Tune: BOURBON Text Sources: The Psalter, 1912; alt.

O Father, All-Creating

Author: John Ellerton Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 47 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 127:1 First Line: O Father, all creating Lyrics: 1 O Father all-creating, whose wisdom, love, and pow'r first bound two lives together in Eden's primal hour, today to these thy children thine earliest gifts renew, a home by thee made happy, a love by thee kept true. 2 O Savior, guest most bounteous of old in Galilee, vouchsafe today thy presence with these who call on thee; their store of earthly gladness transform to heav'nly wine, and teach them in the tasting To know the gift is thine. 3 O Spirit of the Father, breathe on them from above, so mighty in thy pureness so tender in thy love, that, guarded by thy presence, from sin and strife kept free, their lives may own thy guidance, their hearts be ruled by thee. 4 Except thou build it, Father, the house is built in vain; except thou, Savior, bless it, the joy will turn to pain; but naught can break the union of hearts in thee made one; and love thy Spirit hallows is endless love begun. Psalm 127

Author: Harriet Auber Appears in 77 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 127:1 First Line: Vainly, through night's weary hours Lyrics: 1 Vainly, through night's weary hours, Keep we watch, lest foes alarm; Vain our bulwarks, and our towers, But for God's protecting arm. 2 Vain were all our toil and labor, Did not God that labor bless; Vain, without his grace and favor, Every talent we possess. 3 Vainer still the hope of heaven, That on human strength relies; But to him shall help be given, Who in humble faith applies. 4 Seek we, then, the Lord's Anointed; He will grant us peace and rest; Ne'er was suppliant disappointed, Who thro' Christ his prayer addressed. God, Who Made the Earth and Heaven

Author: Reginald Heber; William Mercer; Richard Whately Meter: 8.4.8.4.8.8.8.4 Appears in 471 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 127:2 Lyrics: 1. God, who made the earth and heaven, darkness and light: you the day for work have given, for rest the night. May your angel guards defend us, slumber sweet your mercy send us, holy dreams and hopes attend us all through the night. 2. And when morn again shall call us to run life's way, may we still, whate'er befall us, your will obey. From the power of evil hide us, in the narrow pathway guide us, never be your smile denied us all through the day. 3 Guard us waking, guard us sleeping, and, when we die, maywe in your mighty keeping all peaceful lie. When the last dread call shall wake us, then, O Lord, do not forsake us, but to reign in glory take us with you on high. 4 Holy Father, throned in heaven, all holy Son, Holy Spirit, freely given, blest Three in One: grant us grace, we now implore you, till we lay our crowns before you, and in worthier strains adore you while ages run. God Is Working His Purpose Out

Author: Arthur C. Ainger, 1841-1919 Meter: Irregular Appears in 93 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 127:1 Lyrics: 1 God is working his purpose out, as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near. Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 2 From the east to utmost west, where human feet have trod, by the mouth of many messengers goes forth the voice of God, "Give ear to me, you continents, you isles, give ear to me, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea." 3 March we forth in the strength of God, with the banner of Christ unfurled, that the light of the glorious Gospel of truth may shine throughout the world. Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin to set their captives free, that the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. 4 All we can do is nothing worth unless God blesses the deed. Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide till God gives life to the seed. Yet nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea. Used With Tune: PURPOSE
