Psalm 124: Now Israel may say, and that truly

Meter: 10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 26 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 124 First Line: Now Israel Lyrics: 1Now Israel may say, and that truly, If that the Lord had not our cause maintain’d; 2If that the Lord had not our right sustain’d, When cruel men against us furiously Rose up in wrath, to make of us their prey; 3Then certainly they had devour’d us all, And swallow’d quick, for ought that we could deem; Such was their rage, as we might well esteem. 4And as fierce floods before them all things drown, So had they brought our soul to death quite down. 5The raging streams, with their proud swelling waves, Had then our soul o’erwhelmed in the deep. 6But bless’d be God, who doth us safely keep, And hath not giv’n us for a living prey Unto their teeth, and bloody cruelty. 7Ev’n as a bird out of the fowler’s snare Escapes away, so is our soul set free: Broke are their nets, and thus escaped we. 8Therefore our help is in the Lord’s great name, Who heav’n and earth by his great pow’r did frame.

Had not the God of truth and love

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 18 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 124 Lyrics: 1 Had not the God of truth and love, When hosts against us rose, Display'd his vengeance from above, And crush'd the conqu'ring foes; 2 Their armies like a raging flood Had swept the guardless land, Destroy'd on earth his blest abode, And whelm'd our feeble band. 3 But safe beneath his spreading shield His sons securely rest, Defy the dangers of the field, And bear the fearless breast. 4 And now our souls shall bless the Lord, Who broke the deadly snare; Who sav'd us from the murd'ring sword, And made our lives his care. 5 Our help is in Jehovah's name, Who form'd the heav'ns above; He that supports their wond'rous frame Can guard his church by love. Psalm 124

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 37 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 124 First Line: Had not the Lord, may Isr'el say Lyrics: Had not the Lord, may Isr'el say, Had not the Lord maintained our side, When men, to make our lives a prey, Rose like the swelling of the tide; The swelling tide had stopped our breath, So fiercely did the waters roll, We had been swallowed deep in death; Proud waters had o'erwhelmed our soul. We leap for joy, we shout and sing, Who just escaped the fatal stroke; So flies the bird with cheerful wing, When once the fowler's snare is broke. For ever blessed be the Lord, Who broke the fowler's cursed snare, Who saved us from the murd'ring sword, And made our lives and souls his care. Our help is in Jehovah's name, Who formed the earth and built the skies: He that upholds that wondrous frame Guards his own church with watchful eyes. Had not the Lord (may Isr'l say)

Appears in 6 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 124 Lyrics: 1 Had not the Lord (may Isr'el say) been pleas'd to interpose, 2 Had he not then espous'd our Cause, when Men against us rose, 3,4,5 Their Wrath had swallow'd us alive, and rag'd without Controul; Their Spite and Pride's united Floods had quite o'erwhelm'd our Soul. 6 But prais'd be our eternal Lord, who rescu'd us that Day, Nor to their savage Jaws gave up our threat'ned Lives a Prey. 7 Our Soul is like a Bird escap'd from out the Fowler's Net; The Snare is broke, their Hopes are cross'd, and we at Freedom set. 8 Secure is his Almighty Name, our Confidence remains, Who, as he made both Heav'n and Earth, of both sole Monarch reigns.
