God of the Prophets, Bless the Prophets' Sons

Author: Denis Wortman, 1835-1922 Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 61 hymnals Scripture: 2 Kings 2:1-15 Lyrics: 1 God of the prophets, bless the prophet's sons; Elijah's mantle o'er Elisha cast. Each age its solemn task may claim but once; Make each one nobler, stronger than the last. 2 Anoint them prophets, men who are intent To be Your witnesses in word and deed, Their hearts aflame, their lips make eloquent, Their eyes awake to ev'ry human need. 3 Anoint them priests, strong intercessors they, For pardon and for love and hope and peace, That, through their pleading, guilty sinners may Find Jesus' mercy and from sin release. 4 Anoint them kings, yes, kingly kings, O Lord. Anoint them with the Spirit of Your Son. Theirs not a jeweled crown, a blood-stained sword; Theirs, by sweet love, for Christ a kingdom won. 5 Make them apostles, heralds of Your cross; Forth let them go to tell the world of grace. Inspired by You, may they count all but loss And stand at last with joy before Your face. Topics: Ordination, Installation Used With Tune: OLD 124TH, abbr.

'Tis Good, Lord, to Be Here

Author: Joseph Armitage Robinson (1858-1933) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Appears in 49 hymnals Scripture: 2 Kings 2:1-14 First Line: 'Tis good, Lord, to be here! Lyrics: 1 'Tis good, Lord, to be here! Thy glory fills the night; thy face and garments, like the sun, shine with unborrowed light. 2 'Tis good, Lord, to be here, thy beauty to behold where Moses and Elijah stand, thy messengers of old. 3 Fulfiller of the past promise of things to be, we hail thy body glorified, and our redemption see! 4 Before we taste of death, we see thy kingdom come: O might we hold the vision bright and make this hill our home! 5 'Tis good, Lord, to be here! Yet we may not remain; but, since thou bidst us leave the mount, come with us to the plain. Topics: Transfiguration Used With Tune: CARLISLE

The Glory of These Forty Days

Author: Maruice F. Bell (1862-1947) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 35 hymnals Scripture: 2 Kings 2:1-14 Lyrics: 1 The glory of these forty days we celebrate with songs of praise; for Christ, by whom all things were made, himself has fasted and has prayed. 2 Alone and fasting Moses saw the loving God who gave the law; and to Elijah, fasting, came the steeds and chariots of flame. 3 So Daniel trained his mystic sight, delivered from the lions’ might; and John, the bridegroom’s friend, became the herald of Messiah’s name. 4 Then grant us, Lord, like them to be full oft in fast and prayer with thee; our spirits strengthen with thy grace, and give us joy to see thy face. 5 O Father, Son, and Spirit blest, to thee be every prayer addressed, who art in threefold name adored, from age to age, the only Lord. Topics: Ash Wednesday; Lent (season) Used With Tune: ERHALT UNS, HERR Text Sources: Latin (6th cent.)

We Have Come at Christ's Own Bidding

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr. (1944-) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 12 hymnals Scripture: 2 Kings 2:1-14 Lyrics: 1 We have come at Christ’s own bidding to this high and holy place, where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God’s grace. Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain, searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain. 2 Light breaks in upon our darkness, splendour bathes the flesh-joined Word, Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard. Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the law and prophets meet: Christ, with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete. 3 Strengthened by this glimpse of glory, fearful lest our faith decline, we like Peter find it tempting to remain and build a shrine. But true worship gives us courage to proclaim what we profess, that our daily lives may prove us people of the God we bless. Topics: Transfiguration Used With Tune: O MEIN JESU, ICH MUSS STERBEN

Transfigured Christ, None Comprehends

Author: Alan Gaunt (1935-) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 2 Kings 2:1-14 Lyrics: 1 Transfigured Christ, none comprehends your majesty, whose splendour stuns all waking souls; whose light transcends the brightness of a thousand suns! 2 You stand with Moses on the hill, you speak of your new exodus. The way through death, you will fulfil by dying helpless on the cross. 3 You stand here with Elijah too, by whom the still small voice was heard: and you, yourself, will prove God true, made mute in death, incarnate Word. 4 If we could bear your brightness here and stay for ever in your light, then we would conquer grief and fear, and scorn the terrors of the night. 5 But, from the heights, you bring us down, to share earth's agonies with you, where piercing thorns are made your crown and death, accepted, proves love true. 6 Majestic Christ, God's well-loved son, if we must share your grief and loss, transfigure us, when all is done, with glory shining from your cross.
