Hymn 119

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 116 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 First Line: Christ and his cross is all our theme Lyrics: Christ and his cross is all our theme; The myst'ries that we speak Are scandal in the Jew's esteem, And folly to the Greek. But souls enlightened from above With joy receive the word; They see what wisdom, power, and love Shine in their dying Lord. The vital savor of his name Restores their fainting breath; But unbelief perverts the same To guilt, despair, and death. Till God diffuse his graces down, Like showers of heav'nly rain, In vain Apollos sows the ground, And Paul may plant in vain.

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

Author: Henry Alford, 1810-1871 Meter: 7.7.7.7 D Appears in 722 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:9 Lyrics: 1 Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home. All is safely gathered in ere the winter storms begin. God, our maker, does provide for our wants to be supplied; come to God's own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home. 2 All the world is God's own field, fruit unto his praise to yield, wheat and tares together sown, unto joy or sorrows grown. First the blade, and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear, Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. 3 For the Lord our God shall come and shall take his harvest home, from his field shall in that day all offenses purge away, give his angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast, but the fruitful ears to store in his garner evermore. 4 Even so, Lord, quickly come to your final harvest home, gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin, there, forever purified, in your presence to abide. Come, with all your angels, come, raise the glorious harvest home. Used With Tune: ST. GEORGE'S, WINDSOR

[Refrain:] All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love. 2 He only is the Maker of all things near and far; he paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star; the wind and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed; much more to us, his children, he gives our daily bread. [Refrain] 3 We thank you then, O Father, for all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer for all your love imparts, with what we know you long for: our humble, thankful hearts. What words can convey it--the joy of this day? When grateful we come, remembering, rejoicing, what song can we offer in honor and praise? 2 Give thanks for the Past, for those who had vision, who planted and watered so dreams could come true. Give thanks for the Now, for study, for worship, for mission that bids us turn prayer into deed. 3 Give thanks for Tomorrow, full or surprises, for knowing whatever Tomorrow may bring, God gives us his word that always, forever, we rest in his keeping and live in his love. 4 This gift we now bring, this present, this token, these words can convey it--the joy of this day! The Church's One Foundation

Author: Samuel J. Stone Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Appears in 856 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3 Lyrics: 1 The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth; her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder the world sees her oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: "How long?" and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.
