Soul, Adorn Thyself with Gladness

Author: Catherine Winkworth; Johann Franck Hymnal: The Lutheran Hymnal #305 (1941) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.8.8 Scripture: Revelation 19:8 Lyrics: 1 Soul, adorn thyself with gladness, Leave behind all gloom and sadness; Come into the day-light's splendor, There with joy thy praises render Unto Him whose grace unbounded Hath this wondrous Supper founded. High o'er all the heav'ns He reigneth, Yet to dwell with thee He deigneth. 2 Hasten as a bride to meet Him And with loving rev'rence greet Him, For with words of life immortal Now He knocketh at thy portal. Haste to ope the gates before Him, Saying, while thou dost adore Him: Suffer, Lord, that I receive Thee, And I nevermore will leave Thee. 3 He who craves a precious treasure Neither cost nor pain will measure; But the priceless gifts of heaven God to us hath freely given. Tho' the wealth of earth were proffered, Naught would buy the gifts here offered: Christ's true body, for thee riven, And His blood, for thee once given. 4 Ah, how hungers all my spirit For the love I do not merit! Oft have I, with sighs fast thronging, Thought upon this food with longing, In the battle well-nigh worsted, For this cup of life have thirsted, For the Friend who here invites us And to God Himself unites us. 5 In my heart I find ascending Holy awe, with rapture blending, As this mystery I ponder, Filling all my soul with wonder, Bearing witness at this hour Of the greatness of God's power; Far beyond all human telling Is the pow'r within Him dwelling. 6 Human reason, though it ponder, Cannot fathom this great wonder That Christ's body e'er remaineth Though it countless souls sustaineth And that He His blood is giving With the wine we are receiving. These great mysteries unsounded Are by God alone expounded. 7 Jesus, Sun of Life, my Splendor, Jesus, Thou my Friend most tender, Jesus, Joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring-- At Thy feet I cry, my Maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessed food from heaven, For our good, Thy glory, given. 8 Lord, by love and mercy driven Thou hast left Thy throne in heaven On the cross for me to languish And to die in bitter anguish, To forego all joy and gladness And to shed Thy blood in sadness. By this blood, redeemed and living, Lord, I praise Thee with thanksgiving. 9 Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray Thee, Let me gladly here obey Thee. By Thy love I am invited, Be Thy love with love requited; From this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love's treasure. Through the gifts Thou here dost give me As Thy guest in heav'n receive me. Amen. Topics: The Sacraments The Lord's Supper Languages: English Tune Title: SCHMÜCKE DICH

Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face

Author: Horatius Bonar Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #549 (1985) Meter: 10.10.10.10 Scripture: Revelation 19:9 Lyrics: 1 Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face; here would I touch and handle things unseen, here grasp with firmer hand th'eternal grace, and all my weariness upon thee lay. 2 Here would I feed upon the bread of God, here drink with thee the royal wine of heav'n; here would I lay aside each earthly load, here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiv'n. 3 This is the hour of banquet and of song; this is the heav'nly table spread for me; here let me feast, and feasting still prolong this hallowed hour of fellowship with thee. 4 Too soon we rise: the symbols disappear; the feast, though not the love, is past and gone; the bread and wine remove, but thou art here, nearer than ever, still my Shield and Sun. 5 I have no help but thine; nor do I need another arm save thine to lean upon; it is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; my strength is in thy might, thy might alone. 6 Feast after fear thus comes and passes by, yet, passing, points to that glad feast above, giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy, the Lamb's great bridal feast of bliss and love. 6 Mine is the sin, but thine the righteousness; mine is the guilt, but thine the cleansing Blood. Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace; thy Blood, thy righteousness, O Lord, my God! Languages: English Tune Title: LANGRAN

Jerusalem the Golden

Author: Bernard of Cluny; J. M. Neale Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #579 (1985) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Scripture: Revelation 19:9 Lyrics: 1 Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppress'd: I know not, Oh, I know not, what joys await us there, what radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare. 2 They stand, those halls of Zion, conjubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng: the cross is all their splendor, The Crucified their praise, his laud and benediction his ransomed people raise. 3 There is the throne of David, and there, from sin released, the shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast, and they who with their Leader have conquered in the fight, forever and forever are clad in robes of white. 4 There God, our King and Portion, the fullness of his grace shall we behold forever and worship face to face. Then all the halls of Zion for aye shall be complete, and in the land of beauty all things of beauty meet. Topics: Funerals Languages: English Tune Title: EWING
