Wise Men, They Came to Look for Wisdom

Author: Christopher Idle, 1938- Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #234 (2003) Meter: 9.8.9.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Wise men, they came to look for wisdom, finding one wiser than they knew; rich men, they met with one yet richer-- King of the kings, they knelt to you: Jesus, our wisdom from above, wealth and redemption, life and love. 2 Pilgrims they were, from unknown countries, searching for one who knows the world; lost are their names, and strange their journeys, famed is their zeal to find the child: Jesus, in you the lost are claimed, aliens are found and known and named. 3 Magi, they stooped to see your splendor, led by a star to light supreme; promised Messiah, Lord eternal, glory and peace are in your name: Joy of each day, our song by night, shine on our path your holy light. 4 Guests of their God, they opened treasures, incense and gold and solemn myrrh; welcoming one too young to question how came these gifts, and what they were: Gift beyond price of gold or gem, make among us your Bethlehem. As Oft, with Worn and Weary Feet

Author: James Edmeston Hymnal: The Cyber Hymnal #263 Lyrics: 1. As oft, with worn and weary feet, We tread earth’s rugged valley o’er, The thought, how comforting and sweet: Christ trod this very path before! Our wants and weaknesses He knows, From life’s first dawning to its close. 2. Does sickness, feebleness or pain Or sorrow in our path appear? The recollection will remain, More deeply did He suffer here: His life, how truly sad and brief, Filled up with suffering and with grief. 3. If Satan tempt our hearts to stray And whisper evil things within, So did he, in the desert way, Assail our Lord with thoughts of sin, When worn and in a feeble hour The tempter came with all his power. 4. Just such as I, this earth He trod, With every human ill but sin; And though indeed the very God, As I am now so He has been. My God, my Savior, look on me, With pity, love and sympathy. Who knew no sin and no deceiving

Author: Rev. Emanuel Cronenwett, D. D.; Rev. George Cronenwett Hymnal: Evangelical Lutheran hymnal #402 (1908) Lyrics: 1 Who knew no sin and no deceiving, Has borne my sin and my distress; And I by grace in Him believing, Now deck me with His righteousness. As He is sinner to my good, So I am holy through His blood. 2 Nay not in me, self-righteous were it, On God's grace rests my holiness; He looks on Christ's atoning merit, And counts this as my righteousness: This I believe, and hence my claim, That I am holy in His Name. 3 In Christ, by faith then, I am holy, In self though 'tis not yet the case; But I will likewise now so wholly Seek e'er in life to walk by grace, That soul and body may remain All blameless till Christ come again. 4 I will devote my every member To serve in righteousness God's will, Then when I falter, e'er remember That I may trust God's mercy still; And pray that God would guide through strife, That I may lead a holy life. 5 Thus will I walk, O God, before Thee, That my light too may shine alway And that I by my life adore Thee, Till I at length on that great day In life and self shall holy be, And wholly perfect, Lord, with Thee.
