Died: December 2, 1964, Bronte, Texas. Buried: Fairview Cemetery, Bronte, Texas. Bernard was the son of David W. Edmiaston and Georgia Ann Fluty, and husband of Ella Allen. He studied music under Rufus Turner, Franklin Eiland, W. H. Lawson, Berry McGee, Emmett Dean, G. W. Fields, John Herbert, and many others, and taught singing schools for at least 38 years. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he attended Trinity College and became a minister in the (Anglican) Church of Ireland. He pastored at various locations in Ireland. In 1884 he became leader of the Plymouth Brethren. He married Anne Blake Edge. They had four children. He wrote hymn poems and about 1000 songs. He composed many melodies and oratories. He died in Abbeyleix, Ireland. While holding crusades in Scotland with D. L. Moody, Ira Sankey came across Cluff's poem about prayer and composed the music for it, used in subsequent crusades. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: Will E. Witter Hymnal Number: d198 Author of "While Jesus whispers to you" in Worship in Song Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Will M. Ramsey

1872 - 1939 Person Name: William M. Ramsey Hymnal Number: d149 Author of "He whispers sweet peace to me" in Worship in Song William Morgan Ramsey Born: August 24, 1872, Belton, Texas. Died: March 12, 1939, Little Rock, Arkansas. Buried: Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, Arkansas. Will was the son of Charles Crump Ramsey and Martha Ann Frances Burns. He married twice, to Virgie Celemma Statton and Willie Mannasas Lawing. Ramsey moved with his family to northwest Arkansas as a child. He studied music in Normal schools under Ephraim Hildebrand, Stephen Oslin, and Benjamin Unseld. He began teaching shape notes and singing while still a teenager, and became well known in singing schools throughout the American South. Died: April 30, 1946, Fort Worth, Texas. Buried: Greenwood Cemetery, Fort Worth, Texas. Note: Some sources give his first name as John; his tombstone says James. Thomas was the husband of Courtney Lee Wigley and Pearl Hatchett (married 1923) In 1874, his family moved from their farm in Texas to Arkansas. His father died later that year. As the oldest son, he had his hands full supporting the family, but he managed to begin attending a vocal school at age 17, under Professor T. A. Bridges. He later studied under Horatio Palmer and George A. Goodrich. He began a full time music career in 1890, and with Franklin Eiland and John M. Greer, and helped found the Trio Music Company in Waco, Texas, in 1892. He went on to establish the Quartet Music Company in Fort Worth, Texas.
