It Came upon a Midnight Clear

Author: Edmund H. Sears Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 872 hymnals Lyrics: 1 It came upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to all from heaven’s gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing. 2 Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heav’nly music floats o’er all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hov’ring wing, and ever o’er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing. 3 Yet with the woes of sin and strife, the world has suffered long; beneath the heav’nly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong, and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring. O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing. 4 And you, beneath life's crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow: Look now! for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing. O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing. 5 For lo, the days are hast’ning on, by prophet bards foretold, when with the ever-circling years comes round the age of gold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world sends back the song which now the angels sing. Topics: Jesus Christ Advent of; Jesus Christ Second Coming of; Peace Conflict and War; Reign of Christ Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 Used With Tune: CAROL Text Sources: Christian Register, 1849, alt.

The Glory of These Forty Days

Author: Gregory the Great; Maurice F. Bell Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 35 hymnals Lyrics: 1 The glory of these forty days we celebrate with songs of praise, for Christ, by whom all things were made, himself has fasted and has prayed. 2 Alone and fasting Moses saw the loving God who gave the law. And to Elijah, fasting, came the steed and chariots of flame. 3 So Daniel trained his mystic sight, delivered from the lion’s might. And John, the Savior’s friend, became the herald of Messiah’s name. 4 Then grant, O God, that we may, too, return in fast and prayer to you. Our spirits strengthen with your grace, and give us joy to see your face. Topics: Ash Wednesday; Heritage Before 1500; John the Baptist; Lent Scripture: 2 Kings 2:11 Used With Tune: WAREHAM Text Sources: Clarum decus jejunii, 11th c.; trans. Maurice F. Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

Author: Jeannette Threlfall Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 159 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang. Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang. To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. 2 From Olivet they followed ’mid an exultant crowd, the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud. The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait. 3 “Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heav’n, our King. Oh, may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice! Topics: Children / Childhood; Palm Sunday; Reign of Christ Scripture: Psalm 118:19-29 Used With Tune: ELLACOMBE Text Sources: Sunshine and Shadow, 1873, alt.

Shun not suff’ring, shame, or loss. Learn of him to bear the cross. 3 Calv’ry’s mournful mountain climb. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (La cruz excelsa al contemplar)

Author: Isaac Watts; W. T. T. Millham Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 1,997 hymnals Lyrics: 1 When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. 2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them through his blood. 3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4 Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an off’ring far too small. Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Topics: Blood of Christ; Commitment; Jesus Christ Death of Scripture: Matthew 27:27-54 Used With Tune: HAMBURG Text Sources: Hymns and Spiritual Songs, 1707

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

Author: Paul Gerhardt; James W. Alexander Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Appears in 725 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown! O sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine. 2 What thou, my Lord, hast suffered was all for sinners’ gain. Mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! ’Tis I deserve thy place. Look on me with thy favor, and grant to me thy grace. 3 What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest Friend, for this, thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? Oh, make me thine forever, and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee. 4 Be near when I am dying, oh, show thy cross to me, and for my rescue, flying, come, Lord, and set me free! These eyes, new faith receiving, from Jesus shall not move, for one who dies believing dies safely, through thy love.
