1653 - 1735 Person Name: J. Swedberg Hymnal Number: 88 Translator (Swedish) of "Udi din Haand, o Fader blid" in Salmebog for Lutherske Kristne i Amerika Biship of Skara, Sweden. He was entrusted in creating the first book ever of Swedish hymns, known today as "Swedberg's Book of Hymns, printed in 1694. It was soon declared heretical by some, because it focused too much on good works and not enough on faith. The whole edition was revoked, however, not before some copies made their way to Swedish colonies overseas. A new edition was published containing about 500 hymns, 30 of which bore Swedberg's name as author or translator. Several of these are still in the modern Swedish Book of Hymns.

C. Marot

1497 - 1544 Person Name: Clement Marot Hymnal Number: 191 Author of "Jeg raaber fast, o Herre" in Salmebog for Lutherske Kristne i Amerika Born: About 1497, Cahors, France. Died: August 1544, Turin, Italy. At age 16, Marot became a page to Nicolas de Neufville, and at age 21 Valet de Chambre to Marguerite de Valois. He later fought at Pavia, where he was wounded and taken prisoner with Francis I. From 1537-9 he translated about 30 psalms, which were published in 1542. He traveled widely, sometimes fleeing persecution, and stayed at various times in Savoy, Geneva, and Turin. Joachim Justus Breithaupt

1658 - 1732 Person Name: Joakim Breithaupt Hymnal Number: 494 Author of "Forsøger eder selv" in Salmebog for Lutherske Kristne i Amerika Breithaupt, Joachim Justus, son of Christian Breithaupt, Superintendent of the district of Hohenstadt or Honstedt, Hannover, was born at Nordheim, in Hannover, Feb., 1658. After a theological course at Helmstadt he became, in 1680, Conrector of the Gymnasium at Wolfenbüttel, but left in 1681, and, after being Professor of Homiletics in Kiel, was appointed, in 1685, Court preacher and member of the Consistory at Meiningen. In 1687 he became Pastor and Professor of Theology at Erfurt, receiving in the same year the degree of D.D. from the University of Kiel. Driven from Kiel by the Pietistic Controversy, he was appointed in 1691 pastor of the Cathedral Church, and dean of the Theological Faculty, at Halle; and in 1705, in addition, General Superintendent of the Duchy of Magdeburg. In 1709 he became Abt of Kloster-Bergen and Inspector of the Saalkreis. He died at Kloster-Bergen, March 16, 1732 (Koch, iv. 331-312; Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, iii. 291-292; Bode, p. 49). Of his 4 (5?) hymns one has passed into English:— Jesus Christus, Gottes Lamm. [Passiontide.] Founded on Romans viii. 8-11. First in the Geistreiches Gesang-Buch, Halle, 1697, p. 549, in 5 stanzas. The translations are—(1) "Christ, th' eternal Lamb of God," by J.C. Jacobi, 1725, p. 13), repeated as No. 537 in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. (2) "Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God," in G. Johann C. Arnschwanger

1625 - 1696 Person Name: J. Arnschwanger Hymnal Number: 181 Author (attributed to) of "Jesus! naar jeg Synet ned" in Salmebog for Lutherske Kristne i Amerika Arnschwanger, Johann Christoph, son of Georg Arnschwanger, merchant in Nürnberg, was born at Nürnberg Dec. 28, 1625. He entered the University of Altdorf in 1644, and that of Jena in 1647, where he graduated M.A. Aug. 9, 1647. After short periods of residence at Leipzig, Hamburg, and Helmstädt he returned to Nürnberg in 1650. There he was successively appointed Stadt-vicar in 1651, Diaconus of the St. Aegidien Church 1652, Morning Preacher in St. Walpurga's 1654, and Diaconus of the Church of St. Lorenz 1659. where he became Senior 1670, and Archidiaconus 1690. He died at Nürnberg, Dec. 10, 1696. (Koch, iii. 517-520; Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, i. 597.) A lover of music and poesy, he was the correspondent of Anton Ulrich (q. v.) and a member of the Fruitbearing Society (1675). He did not join the Nürnberg Pegnitz Shepherd Order, seeking in his poetical work simplicity and fitness for popular use rather than their somewhat affected “learnedness." The best of his hymns, some 400 in all, the most important being those published in 1659, appeared in his:— i. Neuegeistliche Lieder, Nürnberg, 1659, in two books, each containing 20 hymns, set to music by the best organists and choir masters in Nürnberg. ii. Heilige Palmen und Christliche Psalmen, Nürnberg, 1680, with 150 hymns in three divisions, with melodies by the musicians of Nürnberg. Of these hymns the only one translated into English is:— Auf, ihr Christen, lasst uns singen. [Easter.] First published in 1659 as above, Bk. i., No. 13, in 12 stanzas of 11 lines, entitled "On the Victorious Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, in which our future Resurrection is also set forth." Included in the Nürnberg Gesang-buch, 1676, No. 227, as No. 98 in pt. ii., 1714, of Freylinghausen's Gesang-Buch, and recently (reduced to stanzas i., ix.) as No. 213 in the Berlin Gesang-Buch, 1829. The only translation in common use is, “Up, ye Christians, join in singing," from the Berlin Gesang-Buch in N. L. Frothingham's Metrical Pieces, Boston, U.S., 1870, p. 194, and thence altered and beginning, "Rise, ye Christians," as No. 644 in the Swedenborgian Collection, Lond., 1880. [Rev.
