Harriet Phillips

1806 - 1884 Person Name: Harriet Cecilia Phillips Hymnal Number: d124 Author of "We chant the wondrous story" in The Pearl Phillips, Harriet Cecilia, was born in Sharon, Connecticut, in 1806, and was for many years an active worker in Sunday Schools in New York city. She contributed five hymns to the Rev. W. C. Hoyt's Family and Social Melodies, 1853, and has also written for various magazines. "We bring no glittering treasures" (Sunday School Anniversary), was written circa 1848 for a Sunday School Festival in New York city, and published in the Methodist Episcopal Hymns, 1849 (Nutter's Hymn Notes, 1884, p. 31l). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)

1844 - 1926 Person Name: Ada C. Cross Hymnal Number: d65 Author of "Light of the world, O shine on us" in The Pearl Cross, Ada, née Cambridge, daughter of Henry Cambridge, born at St. Germaine, Norfolk, Nov. 21, 1844, and married, in 1869, to George Frederick Cross, who, in 1870, took Holy Orders as a curate in England, and subsequently, after holding various curacies in Australia, became, in 1877, Incumbent of Coleraine, in the diocese of Ballarat. Her works include Hymns on the Holy Communion, 1866; Hymns on the Litany, 1865, &c.; and she has also contributed to Lays of the Pious Minstrels, 1862; English Lyrics, &c.; and published a prose story, "The Two Surplices,” 1865, and tales in various magazines. Her hymns have attained to some popularity, and are characterized by great sweetness and purity of rhythm, combined with naturalness and simplicity. The best known are:— 1. Humbly now with deep contrition. 1865. Lent. 2. Jesus, Great Redeemer. 1866. Holy Communion. 3. Light of the world, O shine on us. 1865. Domestic Worship. 4. Saviour, by [to] Thy sweet compassion. Mrs. M. P. A. Crozier

b. 1834 Person Name: Maria P. A. Crozier Hymnal Number: d21 Author of "Come to me, Savior, come" in The Pearl Maria Polly Alger Crozier USA 1834-1912. Born in Honeoye, NY, she attended school in Rochester, NY, and graduated from McGrawville College, McGraw, NY. She married Owen Russell Loomis Crozier, and they had 6 sons: Arthur, Ernest, Alfred, Hubert, Galen, Charles, and 2 daughters: Nanna and Jenny. IN 1854 they moved to MI, where they became teachers in the public schools of Grand Rapids. She wrote for the “Advent Harbinger” and the “Children's Friend” publications and contributed poems to journals such as “The Sybill”, “The Household Advocate” and “The Morning Star”. She died in Grand Rapids, MI. John Perry

1821 - 1861 Hymnal Number: d38 Author of "O loving Jesus" in The Pearl Ballantyne, Randall Hunter, sister of R. M. Ballantyne, the novelist, was born July 8, 1821, and died in August, 1861. Her Heir of Glory was published in 1849, Mabel Grant, 1854, and others.
