Joseph Smith’s First Prayer

Author: George Manwaring, 1854–1889 Hymnal: LDS1985 #26 (1985) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Tune Title: DIVINITY First Line: Oh, how lovely was the morning! Lyrics: 1. Oh, how lovely was the morning! Radiant beamed the sun above. Bees were humming, sweet birds singing, Music ringing thru the grove, When within the shady woodland Joseph sought the God of love, When within the shady woodland Joseph sought the God of love. 2. Humbly kneeling, sweet appealing— ’Twas the boy’s first uttered prayer— When the pow’rs of sin assailing Filled his soul with deep despair; But undaunted, still he trusted In his Heav’nly Father’s care, But undaunted, still he trusted In his Heav’nly Father’s care. 3. Suddenly a light descended, Brighter far than noonday sun, And a shining, glorious pillar O’er him fell, around him shone, While appeared two heav’nly beings, God the Father and the Son, While appeared two heav’nly beings, God the Father and the Son. 4. “Joseph, this is my Beloved; Hear him!” Oh, how sweet the word! Joseph’s humble prayer was answered, And he listened to the Lord. Oh, what rapture filled his bosom, For he saw the living God, Oh, what rapture filled his bosom, For he saw the living God. Sweet Is the Work

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674–1748 Hymnal: LDS1985 #147 (1985) Tune Title: DOUGLASS First Line: Sweet is the work, my God, my King Lyrics: 1. Sweet is the work, my God, my King, To praise thy name, give thanks and sing, To show thy love by morning light, And talk of all thy truths at night. 2. Sweet is the day of sacred rest. No mortal care shall seize my breast. Oh, may my heart in tune be found, Like David’s harp of solemn sound! 3. My heart shall triumph in my Lord And bless his works and bless his word. Thy works of grace, how bright they shine! How deep thy counsels, how divine! 4. But, oh, what triumph shall I raise To thy dear name through endless days, When in the realms of joy I see Thy face in full felicity! 5. Sin, my worst enemy before, Shall vex my eyes and ears no more. My inward foes shall all be slain, Nor Satan break my peace again. 6. Then shall I see and hear and know All I desired and wished below, And every pow’r find sweet employ In that eternal world of joy. A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief

Author: James Montgomery, 1771–1854 Hymnal: LDS1985 #29 (1985) Tune Title: DUANE STREET Lyrics: 1. A poor wayfaring Man of grief Hath often crossed me on my way, Who sued so humbly for relief That I could never answer nay. I had not pow’r to ask his name, Whereto he went, or whence he came; Yet there was something in his eye That won my love; I knew not why. 2. Once, when my scanty meal was spread, He entered; not a word he spake. Just perishing for want of bread. I gave him all; he blessed it, brake, And ate, but gave me part again. Mine was an angel’s portion then, For while I fed with eager haste, The crust was manna to my taste. 3. I spied him where a fountain burst Clear from the rock; his strength was gone. The heedless water mocked his thirst; He heard it, saw it hurrying on. I ran and raised the suff’rer up; Thrice from the stream he drained my cup, Dipped and returned it running o’er; I drank and never thirsted more. 4. ’Twas night; the floods were out; it blew A winter hurricane aloof. I heard his voice abroad and flew To bid him welcome to my roof. I warmed and clothed and cheered my guest And laid him on my couch to rest, Then made the earth my bed and seemed In Eden’s garden while I dreamed. 5. Stript, wounded, beaten nigh to death, I found him by the highway side. I roused his pulse, brought back his breath, Revived his spirit, and supplied Wine, oil, refreshment—he was healed. I had myself a wound concealed, But from that hour forgot the smart, And peace bound up my broken heart. 6. In pris’n I saw him next, condemned To meet a traitor’s doom at morn. The tide of lying tongues I stemmed, And honored him ’mid shame and scorn. My friendship’s utmost zeal to try, He asked if I for him would die. The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill, But my free spirit cried, “I will!” 7. Then in a moment to my view The stranger started from disguise. The tokens in his hands I knew; The Savior stood before mine eyes. He spake, and my poor name he named, “Of me thou hast not been ashamed. These deeds shall thy memorial be; Fear not, thou didst them unto me.” Topics: Jesus Christ Savior; Love; Parables; Restoration; Service Scripture: Matthew 25:31-40 Languages: English

From All That Dwell Below the Skies

Author: Isaac Watts, 1674–1748 Hymnal: LDS1985 #90 (1985) Tune Title: DUKE STREET Lyrics: 1. From all that dwell below the skies, Let the Creator’s praise arise; Let the Redeemer’s name be sung Through ev’ry land, by ev’ry tongue. 2. In ev’ry land begin the song; To ev’ry land the strains belong. In cheerful sounds all voices raise And fill the world with loudest praise. 3. Your lofty themes, ye mortals, bring; In songs of praise divinely sing. The great salvation loud proclaim, And shout for joy the Savior’s name. 4. Eternal are thy mercies, Lord; Eternal truth attends thy word. Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore, Till suns shall rise and set no more. Redeemer of Israel

Author: William W. Phelps, 1792–1872; Joseph Swain, 1761–1796 Hymnal: LDS1985 #6 (1985) Meter: 11.8.11.8 Tune Title: DULCIMER Lyrics: 1. Redeemer of Israel, Our only delight, On whom for a blessing we call, Our shadow by day And our pillar by night, Our King, our Deliv’rer, our all! 2. We know he is coming To gather his sheep And lead them to Zion in love, For why in the valley Of death should they weep Or in the lone wilderness rove? 3. How long we have wandered As strangers in sin And cried in the desert for thee! Our foes have rejoiced When our sorrows they’ve seen, But Israel will shortly be free. 4. As children of Zion, Good tidings for us. The tokens already appear. Fear not, and be just, For the kingdom is ours. The hour of redemption is near. 5. Restore, my dear Savior, The light of thy face; Thy soul-cheering comfort impart; And let the sweet longing For thy holy place Bring hope to my desolate heart. 6. He looks! and ten thousands Of angels rejoice, And myriads wait for his word; He speaks! and eternity, Filled with his voice, Re-echoes the praise of the Lord. Have I Done Any Good?

Author: Will L. Thompson, 1847–1909 Hymnal: LDS1985 #223 (1985) Meter: Irregular Tune Title: EAST LIVERPOOL Refrain First Line: Then wake up and do something more Lyrics: 1. Have I done any good in the world today? Have I helped anyone in need? Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad? If not, I have failed indeed. Has anyone’s burden been lighter today Because I was willing to share? Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way? When they needed my help was I there? Chorus: Then wake up and do something more Than dream of your mansion above. Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure, A blessing of duty and love. 2. There are chances for work all around just now, Opportunities right in our way. Do not let them pass by, saying, “Sometime I’ll try,” But go and do something today. ’Tis noble of man to work and to give; Love’s labor has merit alone. Only he who does something helps others to live. To God each good work will be known. [Chorus] Topics: Brotherhood; Duty; Love; Service; Special Topics; Worthiness Scripture: James 1:22 Languages: English
