Born in Oxfordshire, England, the youngest daughter of Thomas Rowland. He died while she was young, and she then lived with her grandparents at Wootton, Oxfordshire. Educated at Bueau Down House School, Burnham on Sea, Somerset. Church worker at All Souls Church and ran a Bible class for "lads" for many years. The All Souls Parish Magazine noted that "many men now engaged in the commercial and business life of the town remember her with real affection." --Information taken from a letter from Mrs. G.H. (Greenville, South Carolina, 1865--1926). He was educated at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, and served several Baptist churches before transferring his membership to the Unitarian denomination, after which he served as minister to the First Church in Salem, Massachusetts, 1903-1910, and to the church in Yonkers, New York, 1910-1917.
