Once in Royal David's City

Author: Cecil Frances Alexander Hymnal: Moravian Book of Worship #292 (1995) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7 Scripture: Luke 2:40-52 Lyrics: 1 Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2 He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor and meek and lowly lived on earth our Savior holy. 3 For he is our childhood’s pattern, day by day like us he grew; he was little, weak, and helpless; tears and smiles like us he knew; and he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness. 4 And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that Child, so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heav'n above, and he leads his children on to the place where he has gone. 5 Not in that poor lowly stable with the oxen standing by we shall see him, but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high. There his children gather round, bright like stars, with glory crowned. Topics: Christmas; Christian year--Christmas; Christ's Example Languages: English Tune Title: IRBY

Blest Are the Pure in Heart

Hymnal: Rejoice in the Lord #236 (1985) Meter: 6.6.8.6 Scripture: Luke 2:21-37 Lyrics: 1 Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ's abode. 2 The Lord, who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, to dwell in lowliness with us, our pattern and our king. 3 Still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his dwelling and his throne chooseth the pure in heart. 4 Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be: give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for thee. The First Nowell

Hymnal: Catholic Book of Worship III #344 (1994) Meter: Irregular Scripture: Luke 2 First Line: The first Nowell the angel did say Refrain First Line: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell Lyrics: 1 The first Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. 2 They lookèd up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light And so it continued both day and night. [Refrain] 3 And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. [Refrain] 4 This star drew nigh to the northwest, O'er Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay. [Refrain] 5 Then entered in those wise men three, Full reverently upon their knee, And offered there in his presence, Their gold and myrrh and frankincense. [Refrain] 6 Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav'nly Lord: Who with the Father we adore And Spirit blest for evermore. [Refrain] Topics: Christmas; Epiphany Languages: English Tune Title: THE FIRST NOWELL
