Charles Venn Pilcher

Anglican. Grandnephew of Charlotte Elliott. Hertford College, Oxford, B.A., 1902; M.A., 1905; B.D., 1909; D.D., 1921. Curacies at Birmingham, 1903-1905; St. James, Toronto, 1910-1916; taught theology at Auckland Castle, England, 1905-1906, and at Wycliffe College, Toronto, 1916-1936. Elected coadjutor bishop of Sydney, Australia, at the instance of a former Wycliffe colleague, Archbishop Mowll. He composed hymn tunes and other music, and long played bass clarinet in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Also, he translated and published much devotional material from Iceland, notably Iceland Christian Classics (1950). Buried: Church of St. Mary the Vir­gin, Stan­ton Drew (about eight miles south of Bristol). Hodges’ mu­sic­al gift showed it­self at an ear­ly age; by 1819, he was play­ing the or­gan at St. James’ Church in Bris­tol, and at St. Nicholas’, 1821-1838. He al­so had an in­ter­est­ing me­chan­ic­al bent, and spurred sev­er­al tech­ni­cal im­prove­ments in or­gan de­sign. He com­posed a num­ber of serv­ic­es and an­them piec­es, and Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty award­ed him a doc­tor­ate in mu­sic in 1825. Hodges event­u­al­ly em­i­grat­ed, ac­cept­ing a post at the ca­thed­ral in To­ron­to, Ca­na­da, in 1838. The next year, he be­came mu­sic di­rect­or at Trin­i­ty Par­ish in New York Ci­ty. He be­came the or­gan­ist at Trin­i­ty Church when it opened in 1846 (the church had its or­gan built to his spe­ci­fi­ca­tions). He re­tired for health rea­sons in 1859, and re­turned to his native Eng­land in 1863. Lawrence Bartlett

1933 - 2002 Person Name: Lawrence Francis Bartlett, 1933- Topics: Hymns Specially Suitable for Liturgical Dance Composer of "ONE-FIFTY" in Together in Song Lawrence Bartlett was born in Sydney on the February 13, 1933. He studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music between 1950 and 1957, and at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 1960. He also studied organ, piano, singing and composition. He was the Assistant Director of Music at the King's School, Parramatta, a tutor in church music at Ridley College in Melbourne and in 1965 he was acting cathedral organist and master of the choristers at St Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney. Bartlett was an Anglican clergyman and wrote many compositions suitable for church performance. Bartlett was also a member of the Australian Hymn Book committee, and has been involved in the initiation of schemes for promoting the composition and performance of new liturgical music.
