Praise to the living God

Author: Max Landsberg, 1845-1928; Newton Mann, 1836-1926; William Channing Gannett, 1840-1923 Meter: 6.6.8.4 D Appears in 65 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:1-6 Lyrics: 1 Praise to the living God, all praise be to his name, who was, and is, and is to be, and still the same: the one eternal God before what now appears, the First, the Last, beyond all thought his timeless years! 2 Formless, all lovely forms declare his loveliness; holy, no holiness of earth can his express. Behold the Lord of all: creation speaks his praise, and everywhere above, below, his will obeys. 3 God's Spirit freely flows, high surging where it will: in prophet's word he spoke of old, is speaking still. Established is God's law and changeless it shall stand, deep written on the human heart, on sea, on land. 4 God has eternal life implanted in the soul; his love shall be our strength and stay while ages roll. Praise to the living God, all praise be to his name, who was, and is, and is to be, and still the same! Eternal God, Whose Power Upholds

Author: Henry Hallam Tweedy Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 53 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:2 Lyrics: 1 Eternal God, whose power upholds Both flower and flaming star, To whom there is no here nor there, No time, no near nor far, No alien race, no foreign shore, No child unsought, unknown: O send us forth, Thy prophets true, To make all lands Thine own! 2 O God of love, whose Spirit wakes In every human breast, Whom love, and love alone, can know, In whom all hearts find rest: Help us to spread Thy gracious reign Till greed and hate shall cease, And kindness dwell in human hearts, And all the earth find peace! 3 O God of truth, whom science seeks And reverent souls adore, Who lightest every earnest mind Of every clime and shore: Dispel the gloom of error’s night, Of ignorance and fear, Until true wisdom from above Shall make life’s pathway clear! 4 O God of beauty, oft revealed In dreams of human art, In speech that flows to melody, In holiness of heart: Teach us to turn from sinfulness That shuts our hearts to Thee, Till all shall know the loveliness Of lives made fair and free! 5 O God of righteousness and grace, Seen in the Christ, Thy Son, Whose life and death reveal Thy face, By whom Thy will was done: Inspire Thy heralds of good news To live Thy life divine, Till Christ has formed in all mankind And every land is Thine! How shall I sing that majesty

Author: John Mason, 1646-1694 Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 40 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:1-2 Lyrics: 1 How shall I sing that majesty which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; sing, sing, ye heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around thy throne, O God most high; ten thousand times ten thousand sound thy praise; but who am I? 2 Thy brightness unto them appears, whilst I thy footsteps trace; a sound of God comes to my ears, but they behold thy face: I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, with all my fire and light; yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. 3 Enlighten with faith's light my heart, inflame it with love's fire; then shall I sing and bear a part with that celestial choir. They sing, because thou art their sun; Lord, send a beam on me; for where heaven is but once begun there alleluias be. 4 How great a being, Lord, is thine, which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line to sound so vast a deep: thou art a sea without a shore, a sun without a sphere; thy time is now and evermore, thy place is everywhere. O Christ, the Healer, We Have Come

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 37 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:7-15 Lyrics: 1 O Christ, the healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends. How can we fail to be restored when reached by love that never ends? 2 From every ailment flesh endures our bodies clamor to be freed; yet in our hearts we would confess that wholeness is our deepest need. 3 In conflicts that destroy our health we recognize the world's disease; our common life declares our ills. Is there no cure, O Christ, for these? 4 Grant that we all, made one in faith, in your community may find the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach the whole of humankind. Used With Tune: CANONBURY

Eternal God, We Look to Thee

Thou didst, O mighty God, exist

Author: Mrs. Rowe Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 26 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 90:1-2 Lyrics: 1 Thou didst, O mighty God, exist Ere time began its race-- Before the ample elements Filled up the void of space. 2 Before the ponderous earthly globe In fluid air was stayed, Before the ocean's mighty springs Their liquid stores displayed-- 3 Ere through the gloom of ancient night The streaks of light appeared, Before the high celestial arch Or starry poles were reared-- 4 Ere man adored, or angels knew Or praised thy wondrous name, Thy bliss, O sacred Spring of life, And glory, were the same. 5 And when the pillars of the world With sudden ruin break, And all this vast and goodly frame Sinks in the mighty wreck-- 6 When from her orb the moon shall start, Th' astonished sun roll back, While all the trembling starry lamps Their ancient course forsake-- 7 Forever permanent and fixed, From agitation free, Unchanged in everlasting years Shall thy existence be.
