The Heavens in Their Splendor

Author: Rev. Edward A. Collier, D. D. Meter: 8.8.8.8 D Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 19 First Line: The heav'ns in their splendor declare Lyrics: 1 The heav'ns in their splendor declare The might and the glory of God, For day unto day speaks His praise, And night tells His wisdom abroad. They speak not with audible word, Yet clear is the message they send; Their witness goes out thro' the earth, Their word to the world's farthest end. 2 The law that the Lord has ordained Is perfect, the soul to restore; His truth makes the simple most wise, The truth that is sure evermore. His precepts are righteous and just, Rejoicing the heart and the mind; And all His commandments are pure, Enlight'ning the eyes of the blind. 3 The fear of the Lord is most clean, Forever unmoved it has stood; His judgments are perfectly true, In all things most righteous and good. Such treasure no gold can supply, Such sweetness no honey afford; Their warnings none heed and obey But find most abundant reward. 4 O who can his errors discern? From hidden faults, Lord, keep me free; Let pride never reign in my heart, And clear of great sin I shall be. I pray that my words and my tho'ts May all with Thy precepts accord, And ever be pleasing to Thee, My Rock, my Redeemer, my Lord. The heavens on high abroad declare

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 19 Lyrics: 1 The heav'ns on high abroad declare the majesty of God; And forth the firmament doth show, his handy work abroad. 2 Day speaks to day, and night to night, the knowledge that declar'd. 3 There neither speech nor language is where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line thro' all the earth is gone; and to the utmost end Of all the world, their sounding words, their clear instruction send. 5 In them a vast pavilion he hath spread around the sun; A bridegroom from his chamber goes, strong, his glad race to run. 6 From the east end of heav'n he goes, ascends, and round he flies, To the west end; and from his heat there nothing hidden lies. [2 Part] 7 JEHOVAH's law most perfect is, and does the soul convert: JEHOVAH's testimony sure makes wise the simple heart. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, and they rejoyce the heart; the LORD's commands are clear; and they light to the eye impart. 9 Both pure and everlasting is JEHOVAH's sacred fear: JEHOVAH's judgments are the truth, and wholly righteous are. 10 Than gold, than much refined gold, more to be prized far; Sweeter than honey, or the juice in honey-combs they are. 11 By them thy servant warned is, [his heart and life to guard:] In carefully observing them, there is a great reward. 12 Who can his errors fully know? from secret faults cleanse me; And from presumptuous sins do Thou, keep me thy servant free. 13 O never suffer them to have dominion over me; Then I shall rightly walk, and from great sin preserved be. 14 LORD let the speeches of my mouth, and thoughts within my heart, To Thee be pleasing; who my rock and my redeemer art.

Coeli enarrant

Author: T. S. Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 19 First Line: The heavens and the firmament Lyrics: 1 The heavens and firmament on high do wondrously declare The glory of God omnipotent, his works and what they are. 2 The wondrous works of God appeare by every daies success? The nights likewise which their race run the self same thing express. 3 There is no language, tongue, or speech, where their sound is not heard; In all the earth and coasts thereof their knowledge is confer'd. 4 In them the Lord made for the Sun a place of great renown: who like a bride-groome ready trim'd, doth from his chamber come. 5 And as a valiant champion, who for to get a prize, With joy doth hast to take in hand, some noble enterprise. 6 And all the skie from end to end he compasseth about: Nothing can hide if from his heat, but he will find it out. 7 How perfect is the law of God, how is his covenant sure: Converting soules, and making wise the simple and obscure. 8 Just are the Lords commandements, and glad both heart and mind: His precepts pure and do give light to eyes that be full blind. 9 The feare of God is excellent and doth endure for ever: The judgements of the lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 And more to be embrac'd alway, then fined gold I say: The honey and the honey-combe are not so sweet as they. 11 By them thy servant is fore-warn'd to have God in regard; And in performance of the same, there shall be great reward. 12 But Lord what earthly man doth know the errors of his life: Then cleanse me from my secret sins, which are in me most rife: 13 And keep me that presumptuous sins prevaile not over me: And so shall I be innocent, and great offences flee. 14 Accept my mouth and eke my heart, my words and thoughts each one: For my Redeemer and my strength, O Lord, thou art alone.

God moves in a mysterious way

Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 1,127 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 19:10 Lyrics: 1 God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform; he plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm. 2 Deep in unfathomable mines of never-failing skill he treasures up his bright designs, and works his sovereign will. 3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take; the clouds ye so much dread are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head. 4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust him for his grace; behind a frowning providence he hides a smiling face. 5 His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour; the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower. 6 Blind unbelief is sure to err, and scan his work in vain; God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain.
