Henry Purcell

1659 - 1695 Person Name: Henry Purcell, 1659-95 Scripture: Exodus 15:1-26 Composer of "WESTMINSTER ABBEY" in Together in Song Henry Purcell (b. Westminster, London, England, 1659; d. Westminster, 1695), was perhaps the greatest English composer who ever lived, though he only lived to the age of thirty-six. Purcell's first piece was published at age eight when he was also a chorister in the Chapel Royal. When his voice changed in 1673, he was appointed assistant to John Hingston, who built chamber organs and maintained the king's instruments. In 1674 Purcell began tuning the Westminster Abbey organ and was paid to copy organ music. Given the position of composer for the violins in 1677, he also became organist at Westminster Abbey in 1679 (at age twenty) and succeeded Hingston as maintainer of the king's instruments (1683). Purcell composed music for the theater (Dido and Aeneas, c. 1689) and for keyboards, provided music for royal coronations and other ceremonies, and wrote a substantial body of church music, including eighteen full anthems and fifty-six verse anthems. Ernest Hawkins

1802 - 1868 Person Name: Ernest Hawkins, 1802-68 Scripture: Exodus 15:1-26 Adapter of "WESTMINSTER ABBEY" in Together in Song Hawkins, Ernest, B.D., son of Major Hawkins, born Jan. 25, 1802, at Hitchin, and educated at Balliol College, Oxford (B.A. 1842). He was for sometime a Fellow of Exeter College. On taking Holy Orders he became Curate of Burwash, sub-librarian of the Bodleian Library, Curate of St. George's, Bloomsbury, Minister of Curzon Chapel, Mayfair, London, Prebendary of St. Paul's, and Canon of Westminster. From 1838 to his death, Oct. 5, 1866, he also acted as secretary to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. Besides his prose works, which were not numerous, he published Verses in commemoration of the Third Jubilee of the S.P.G. (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel), 1851-2. To this little collection his hymns were contributed. The most extensively used of these, "Lord, a Saviour's love displaying" (Missions), has been adopted by many collections. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

b. 1952 Person Name: Susan Briehl, b. 1952 Scripture: Exodus 15:20-21 Author of "O God of Exodus" in Gather (3rd ed.) The Rev. Susan R. Briehl is a pastor of the ELCA. She served as Executive Director of Holden Village, a Lutheran center for renewal in the North Cascade Mountains in Washington State. She began that ministry in August of 1994 along with her husband, Martin Wells. Previously they served for 8 years as campus pastors at Pacific Lutheran University and for 5 years as pastors of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bellingham, WA. She has also been a program associate at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IL. Susan holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in English from Washington State University and a Master of Divinity from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA. She was ordained in 1981. Timothy Dudley-Smith

b. 1926 Person Name: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Scripture: Exodus 15 Author of "How shall we sing salvation's song" in Ancient and Modern Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Educated at Pembroke College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge, Dudley-Smith has served the Church of England since his ordination in 1950. He has occupied a number of church positions, including parish priest in the diocese of Southwark (1953-1962), archdeacon of Norwich (1973-1981), and bishop of Thetford, Norfolk, from 1981 until his retirement in 1992. He also edited a Christian magazine, Crusade, which was founded after Billy Graham's 1955 London crusade. Dudley-Smith began writing comic verse while a student at Cambridge; he did not begin to write hymns until the 1960s. Many of his several hundred hymn texts have been collected in Lift Every Heart: Collected Hymns 1961-1983 (1984), Songs of Deliverance: Thirty-six New Hymns (1988), and A Voice of Singing (1993). The writer of Christian Literature and the Church (1963), Someone Who Beckons (1978), and Praying with the English Hymn Writers (1989), Dudley-Smith has also served on various editorial committees, including the committee that published Psalm Praise (1973). Andrew Donaldson

b. 1951 Scripture: Exodus 15:20-21 Author of "With Astonishment, Fear, and Wonder" in Voices Together Andrew Donaldson, a composer and church musician, grew up in northern Ontario, Canada. He attended Glendon College, York University in Toronto, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974. He went on to study classical guitar performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, receiving its ARCT (Associate of Royal Conservatory Teachers) degree in 1979. Since then he has worked as a composer and performer in many contexts, in both French and English. Andrew co-edited the Book of Praise (1997), Presbyterian Church in Canada, with Donald Anderson. Their company, Binary Editions, continues to administer copyright for the PCC. In 2007 he was made a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, by Knox College of the University of Toronto, for his body of work in congregational song in the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
