Then I Saw a New Heaven and Earth

Author: Christopher M. Idle Meter: Irregular Appears in 5 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 Then I saw a new heaven and earth, for the first had passed away; and the holy city came down from God like a bride on her wedding day. And I know how he loves his own, for I heard his great voice tell they would be his people, and he their God, and among them he came to dwell. 2 He will wipe away every tear; even death shall die at last. There'll be no more crying or grief or pain they belong to the world that's past. And the One on the throne said, "Look! I am making all things new." He is A and Z, he is first and last, and his words are exact and true. 3 So the thirsty can drink their fill at the fountain giving life. But the gates are shut on all evil things, on deceit and decay and strife. With foundations and walls and towers like a jewel, the city shines, with its streets of gold and its gates of pearl, in a glory where each combines. 4 As they measured its length and breadth I could see no temple there, for its only temple is God the Lord and the Lamb in that city fair. And it needs neither sun nor moon in a place which knows no night, for the city's lamp is the Lamb himself, and the glory of God its light. 5 And I saw by the sacred throne flowing water, crystal clear, and the tree of life with its healing leaves and its fruit growing all the year. So the worshipers of the Lamb bear his name and see his face, and they reign and serve and forever live to the praise of his glorious grace. God Whose Love is Always Stronger

Author: Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21:5 First Line: God whose love is always stronger Than our weakness, pride and fear Lyrics: God whose love is always stronger Than our weakness, pride and fear, In your world, we pray and wonder How to be more faithful here. Hate too often grows inside us; Fear rules what the nations do. So we pray, when wars divide us: Give us love, Lord! Make us new! Love is patient, kind and caring, Never arrogant or rude, Never boastful, all things bearing; Love rejoices in the truth. When we’re caught up in believing War will make the terror cease, Show us Jesus’ way of living; May our strength be in your peace. May our faith in you be nourished; May your churches hear your call. May our lives be filled with courage As we speak your love for all. Now emboldened by your Spirit Who has given us new birth, Give us love, that we may share it Till your love renews the earth. O Lord, You Gave Your Servant John

Author: Joy F. Patterson Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 O Lord, You gave Your servant John A vision of the world to come: A radiant city filled with light, Where You with us will make Your home; Where neither grief nor pain shall dwell, Since former things have passed away, And where they need no sun nor moon; Your glory lights eternal day. 2 Our cities, Lord, wear shrouds of pain; Beneath our gleaming towers of wealth The homeless crouch in rain and snow, The poor cry out for strength and health. Youth's hope is dimmed by ignorance; Unwilling workers idled stand; Indifference walks unheeding by As hunger stretches out its hand. 3 Come, Lord, make real John's vision fair; Come, dwell with us, make all things new; We try in vain to save our world Unless our help shall come from You. Come, strengthen us to live in love; Bid hatred, greed, injustice cease. Your glory all the light we need, Let all our cities shine forth peace. Used With Tune: ST. PATRICK'S BREASTPLATE

Lo! He Comes, with Clouds Descending

Author: Charles Wesley Meter: 8.7.8.7.8.7 Appears in 768 hymnals Scripture: Revelation 21 Lyrics: 1 Lo! he comes, with clouds descending, once for our salvation slain; thousand thousand saints attending swell the triumph of his train: Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ the Lord returns to reign. 2 Every eye shall now behold him, robed in dreadful majesty; those who set at naught and sold him pierced, and nailed him to the tree, deeply wailing, deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see. 3 Those dear tokens of his passion still his dazzling body bears, cause of endless exultation to his ransomed worshipers; with what rapture, with what rapture gaze we on those glorious scars! 4 Yea, amen! let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Savior, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 2 Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, the one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia! 3 O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia! Alleluia! 4 O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! Alleluia! 6 The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of Paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! 7 But lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day -- the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia!
