Ride on, ride on in majesty!

Author: Henry Milman, 1791-1868 Hymnal: NEH1985 #511 (1986) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Lyrics: 1 Ride on, ride on in majesty! Hark, all the tribes hosanna cry, Thy humble beast pursues his road With palms and scattered garments strowed. 2 Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die: O Christ, thy triumphs now begin O’er captive death and conquered sin. 3 Ride on, ride on in majesty! The wingèd squadrons of the sky Look down with sad and wondering eyes To see the approaching sacrifice. 4 Ride on, ride on in majesty! Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh; The Father on his sapphire throne Awaits his own anointed Son. 5 Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die; Bow thy meek head to mortal pain, Then take, O God, thy power, and reign. Topics: Palm Sunday; Introit Languages: English Tune Title: WINCHESTER NEW

Come, Christ's beloved, feed on his body true

Hymnal: NEH1985 #514 (1986) First Line: Saved by his body, hallowed by his blood Lyrics: [Refrain] 1 Come, Christ's beloved, feed on his body true Drink your salvation in his precious blood. 2 Saved by his body, hallowed by his blood; here in God's banquet; let us thank our Lord. 3 Christ, in this myst'ry gives us his flesh and blood, Guiding us safely through death's shade to light. 4 Son of the Father, king of all the world, Christ is our Saviour by his Cross and blood. 5 Christ, priest and victim, offers himself for all, At once the giver and the gift divine. 6 Priests of the old law, off'ring blood outpoured, did but foreshadow Christ, the Victim Priest. 7 Christ, our redeemer, Christ now the light of men, Does thus enrich us by his grace sublime. 8 Bring to this banquet faithful hearts sincere, take hence the promise of eternal life. 9 Come, Christ's beloved, feed on his body true. Drink your salvation in his precious blood. Topics: Maundy Thursday At the Communion Languages: English Tune Title: COME CHRIST'S BELOVED

Behold the wood of the Cross

Hymnal: NEH1985 #516a (1986) Lyrics: [Priest or Cantor] Behold the wood of the Cross, whereon was hung the Saviour of the world. [All] O come, let us worship. 1 [Cantor] O my people, what have I done to thee, or wherein have I wearied thee? Answer me. Because I brought thee out of the land of Egypt, thou hast prepared a Cross for thy Saviour. [Choir] Holy God, Holy and Mighty. Holy and Immortal, have mercy upon us. 2 [Cantor] Because I led thee through the desert forty years, and fed thee with manna, and brought thee into a land exceeding good, thou hast prepared a Cross for thy Saviour. [Choir] Holy God, Holy and Mighty. Holy and Immortal, have mercy upon us. 3 What could I do more for thee that I have not done? I planted thee, my choicest vine, and thou hast become exceeding bitter unto me: for when I was thirsty thou gavest me to drink vinegar mingled with gall, and hast pierced with a spear the side of thy Saviour. [Choir] Holy God, Holy and Mighty. Holy and Immortal, have mercy upon us. [Cantor] We venerate thy Cross, O lord, [All] and praise and glorify thy holy Resurrection: for by virtue of the Cross joy has come to the whole world. Faithful Cross! above all other

Author: Venantius Fortunatus, 530-609; Percy Dearmer, 1867-1936; J. M. Neale, 1818-66 Hymnal: NEH1985 #517a (1986) First Line: Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle Lyrics: Faithful Cross! above all other One and only noble Tree! None in foliage, none in blossom, None in fruit thy peer may be; Sweetest wood, and sweetest iron! Sweetest weight is hung on thee. 1 Sing, my tongue, how glorious battle, Sing the ending of the fray, O'er the Cross, the victor's trophy, Sound the loud triumphant lay: Tell how Christ, the world's Redeemer, As a Victim won the day. 2 God in pity saw man fallen, Shamed and sunk in misery, When he fell on death by tasting Fruit of the forbidden tree: Then another tree was chosen Which the world from death should free. 3 Therefore when the appointed fullness Of the holy time was come, He was sent who maketh all things Forth from God's eternal home: Thus he came to earth, incarnate, Offspring of a maiden's womb. 4 Thirty years among us dwelling, Now at length his hour fulfilled, Born for this, he meets his Passion, For that this he freely willed, On the Cross the Lamb is lifted, Where his life-blood shall be spilled. 5 Bend thy boughs, O Tree of Glory, Thy too rigid sinews bend; For awhile the ancient rigour That thy birth bestowed, suspend, And the King of heavenly beauty On thy bosom gently tend. 6 Thou alone wast counted worthy This world's Ransom to sustain, That a shipwrecked race might ever Thus a port of refuge gain, With the sacred blood anointed From the Lamb for sinners slain. 7 He endured the nails, the spitting, Vinegar and spear and reed; From that holy Body pierced Blood and water forth proceed: Earth and stars and sky and ocean By that flood from stain are freed. 8 To the Trinity be glory, To the Father and the Son, With the co-eternal Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in love and one in splendour, While unending ages run. Amen. Topics: Good Friday Languages: English Tune Title: CRUX FIDELIS
