It is a thing most wonderful

Author: W. Walsham How, 1823-1897 Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 56 hymnals Lyrics: 1 It is a thing most wonderful, almost too wonderful to be, that God's own Son should come from heaven, and die to save a child like me. 2 And yet I know that it is true: he chose a poor and humble lot, and wept and toiled and mourned and died for love of those who loved him not. 3 I cannot tell how he could love a child so weak and full of sin; his love must be most wonderful, if he could die my love to win. 4 I sometimes think about the cross, and shut my eyes, and try to see the cruel nails and crown of thorns, and Jesus crucified for me. 5 But even could I see him die, I could but see a little part of that great love which, like a fire, is always burning in his heart. 6 It is most wonderful to know his love for me so free and sure; but 'tis more wonderful to see my love for him so faint and poor. 7 And yet I want to love thee, Lord; O light the flame within my heart, and I will love thee more and more, until I see thee as thou art. Topics: Passiontide and Holy Week; Lent IV Year B; Palm Sunday Year B; Proper 24 Year B Scripture: 1 John 3:2 Used With Tune: HERONGATE

O Holy Ghost, thy people bless

Author: H. W. Baker, 1821-1877 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 25 hymnals Lyrics: 1 O Holy Ghost, thy people bless who long to feel thy might, and fain would grow in holiness as children of the light. 2 To thee we bring, who art the Lord, our selves to be thy throne; let every thought and deed and word thy pure dominion own. 3 Life-giving Spirit, o’er us move, as on the formless deep; give life and order, light and love, where now is death or sleep. 4 Great gift of our ascended King, his saving truth reveal; our tongues inspire his praise to sing, our hearts his love to feel. 5 True wind of heaven, from south or north, for joy or chastening, blow; the garden-spices shall spring forth if thou wilt bid them flow. 6 O Holy Ghost, of sevenfold might, all graces come from thee; grant us to know and serve aright one God in Persons Three. Topics: Pentecost Scripture: Ephesians 4:8 Used With Tune: ST TIMOTHY

Her Virgin eyes saw God incarnate born

Author: Thomas Ken Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 10 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Her Virgin eyes saw God incarnate born, when she to Bethlem came that happy morn: how high her raptures then began to swell, none but her own omniscient Son can tell. 2 As Eve, when she her fontal sin reviewed, wept for herself and all she should include, blest Mary, with man's Saviour in embrace, joyed for herself and for all human race. 3 All saints are by her Son's dear influence blest; she kept the very fountain at her breast: the Son adored and nursed by the sweet Maid a thousandfold of love for love repaid. 4 Heaven with transcendent joys her entrance graced, near to his throne her Son his Mother placed; and here below, now she's of heaven possest, all generations are to call her blest. Topics: Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture: Genesis 3:16 Used With Tune: FARLEY CASTLE

Pray for the church afflicted and oppressed

Author: F. Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Meter: 10.10.10.10.10.10 Appears in 7 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Pray for the church afflicted and oppressed, for all who suffer for the gospel's sake, that Christ may show us how to serve them best in that one kingdom Satan cannot shake. But how much more than us they have to give, who by their dying show us how to live! 2 Pray for Christ's dissidents, who daily wait, as Jesus waited in the olive grove, the unjust trial, the pre-determined fate, the world's contempt for reconciling love. Shall all they won for us, at such a cost, be by our negligence or weakness lost? 3 Pray that if times of testing should lay bare what sort we are, who call ourselves his own, we may be counted worthy then to wear, with quiet fortitude, Christ's only crown: the crown that in his saints he wears again the crown of thorns that signifies his reign. Topics: Peace and Justice; Maundy Thursday Scripture: 1 Corinthians 9:22-23 Used With Tune: UNDE ET MEMORES
