When Jesus came to Golgotha

Author: Geoffrey Anketel Studdert-Kennedy (1883-1929) Hymnal: Wonder, Love, and Praise #736 (1997) Meter: 14.14.14.14 Scripture: Matthew 27:27-45 First Line: When Jesus came to Golgotha they hanged him on a tree Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Golgotha they hanged him on a tree, they drove great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary; they crowned him with a crown of thorns, red were his wounds and deep, for those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap. 2 When Jesus came to live with us we simply passed him by, we never hurt a hair of him, we only let him die; for we had grown more tender, and we would not give him pain, we only just passed down the street and left him in the rain. 3 Still Jesus cries, "Forgive them for they know not what they do," and still it rains the winter rain that drenches through and through; the crowds go home and leave the streets without a soul to see, and Jesus crouches 'gainst a wall and cries for Calvary. As newborn stars were stirred to song

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr. (b. 1944) Hymnal: Wonder, Love, and Praise #788 (1997) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Matthew 27:45 Lyrics: 1 As newborn stars were stirred to song when all things came to be, as Miriam and Moses sang when Israel was set free, so music bursts unbidden forth when God-filled hearts rejoice, to waken awe and gratitude and give mute faith a voice. 2 In psalms that raise the singer’s sense to universal truths, in prophet’s dark-toned oracle or hymn of three brave youths: the song of faith and praise endured through those God called to be a chosen people bearing light for all the world to see. 3 When God’s redeeming Word took flesh to make salvation sure, unheeding hearts attuned to strife refused love’s overture. Yet to the end the song went on: a supper’s parting hymn, a psalm intoned on dying lips when sun and hope grew dim. 4 But silence won no vict’ry there; a rest was all it scored before glad alleluias rose to greet the risen Lord. The church still keeps that song alive, for death has lost its sting, and with the gift of life renewed the heart will ever sing.
